Hey guys,

We're planing out trip to from SYD to LAX in March next year.

Looking at somehow using our QFF point to make this trip cheaper/upgrade class,

Myself 80000 points QP and PS
GF 90000 points and SG

I can't figure out the best way to do so.

Any suggestions?

As upgrades are processed based on Status level, you'd be best off moving all your points to your GF's account, booking it on the one PNR and having her submit an upgrade request.

Unfortunately, the downside is then twofold. A) you have to book a fare class that is eligible for upgrade (so not a cheap cheap fare) and B) if the upgrade does not clear, you're stuck with your points in her account for at least 12 months (or until you travel again and try to redeem them or book other fares with them).

I guess if your upgrade does not clear, you and the GF could go on some JASA's and bump your PS up to SG possibly :)

Make it cheaper by pooling points together and buy one of the fares with FF pts.

As previously mentioned upgrades are a lottery (for you guys it will heavily depend on how many WPs are chasing the upgrades you are) so nothing is guaranteed.

You need 96,000 QFF points each + taxes and surcharges for an economy return. Apply for one of the credit cards with signon bonuses and you both should have enough QFF points. And if you happen to find AnySeat availability for the dates you want then you will also earn SCs and QFF points for the trip.

I know it is not business class but it is a cheap(ish) SYD-LAX return.
