Hi

This year I've redeemed about 300,000 points for flights on QF affiliates to East Timor, Fiji, Vanuatu, Samoa, Tonga & PNG... Excellent value at only 30,000 a shot...

Unfortunately, with the changes to the QF rules these destinations are now significantly more expensive in point terms...

Last year I redeemed using LH points to Tahiti - only 30,000 points from MEL via AKL... (Which, given the distance involved, is an extraordinary deal)

Has anyone any experience of the best FF programmes (Star & OW) for redemptions to other Pacific Island destinations (originating in SYD or MEL)?

Other destinations of interest include: Cook Islands (30,000 on LH from MEL); Solomons (now much more expensive using QF points via POM or NAN but perhaps possible with other programmes?); Nauru (I don't think this is covered at all by Star or OW airlines?); Wallis & Futuna (via Noumea - not sure if Air Calin allows redemptions from O/W airlines); Tuvalu (Air Fiji from Suva, one way airfare is $650 FJD - rather expensive given the distance, but unlikely to be available for redemption on any programme); Kiribati; Guam; Palau; Marshall Islands.

I've just redeemed 80,000 Mileage Plus miles for 2 business class tickets on NZ to PPT in August. This is an exceptional deal considering the distance.

If you're willing to slum it in economy, 20,000 Mileage Plus miles will get you to Nandi, Apia, Nuku'alofa, Rarotonga, Papeete or Noumea.

And, there is actually some availabilty (unlike with some other airlines).

Pretty hard to beat, I think.

Pity all my Star Alliance miles were transferred from UA to Ansett.    :( :( :( :(

The thing that worries me with UA is the possibility of demise...

After all, they are already under bankruptcy protection, and they have already farmed out their defined benefit pension scheme to the US Government... With rising fuel prices, unionised labour force, and plenty of competition, surely they have to modify the generous terms of their frequent flyer programme?

But, I have to agree, 20,000 points from AKL to those various South Pacific destinations is not bad value... Business Class for 40,000 is an excellent deal to PPT - especially since most flights go at rather unpleasant times of day...

Does anyone know how many points are required with the other Star members?

.

Was the flight to East Timor was from Darwin on Air North? My wife and I are planning to fly DRW-DIL and return in early June.

I wouldn't be getting your hopes up for an answer from the OP, they haven't been here in nearly 5 years.

You are correct. Thanks for pointing this out

I note that Qantas' frequent flyer redemption page doesn't even list Dili (whether for Classic or Any Seat rewards).

However, Qantas does offer code share seats DRW-DIL and return, using Airnorth flights. Qantas' prices are more expensive (except for fully flexible) than Airnorth's.
