JS1 as seat assignment on boarding pass?

Was waiting in line (no premium boarding ) for a very full BNE-SYD flight got the 'beep' and had to go to the counter to have passport checked (international connection in SYD). Whilst there there was boarding pass on counter for 'Dr ..........' with JS1 as seat assignment. He boarded behind me and disappeared into coughpit and buckled up in the jump seat. No visible ASIC and didn't seem to be a staff member (judging by carry-on).

Asked flight attendant who said this happens sometimes when flight was full - she was't sure of criteria etc

Before 9/11 I had several jump seat assignments/visits but nothing since. Anybody had a JS1? What was the criteria?

I've seen it happen once, when they gave out more boarding passes than they had seats on JQ two years ago. They sent a mum up the front while dad and toddler stayed down the back...the child screamed for it's mother the entire flight.

First time I've heard of this post 9/11. I'd love to get JS1..but they wouldn't dare let an aviation fan like me on the flight deck..!

A friend in London travels on BA, his wife was an FA for them for 20yrs (she resigned or took a package 1-2yrs ago, but keeps her staff travel rights for the next 20yrs, matching her length of service). His flight home from Chicago was in "J for jumpseat" not "J for business class". He's also told me of sitting on the steps of the 747 for most of the flight sometimes, but obvisly not for takeoff and landing.

(He could be full of it, too, but I have no particular reason to think so. And his experience is with BA, not QF).

JS1 and JS2 are jumpseats. People who don't work for the Qantas Group are not allowed to sit there (AT ALL*), and an ASIC is required and has to be carried during the flight.
And then again, even with the above in place, it is up to the Capt. to let you in.

Generally if there is a full flight and no staff get on, the Capt will decide who gets the jumpseat and very rarely a manager will get it

To ride in the jump seat you need either an Qantas Red ASIC or a blue background Qantas ID (which are for staff that don't have airside access but are security screened).

Some government agencies can ride in the flight deck when performing regulatory duties

That isn't quite true. Non Qantas group employees' can sit in the flight deck provided they have the ID required by Qantas. We have government and sometimes other airline pilots who observe for training purposes.

All has to be approved prior though, can't just be done on the day.

Anybody had a JS1? What was the criteria?

Missed out by about five seconds. Full SYD>BNE with DJ. They called for volunteers due to overbooking. Two of us rolled up, the other bloke was offered the JS. Captain came up and gave him the 'once over' look and the nod. I took the next flight, a credit refund and food vouchers.
