Seems fairly likely that once they have finished with the 744 re-furbs, Avalon will follow suit.

Shame really, for those affected.

IMHO.... If Australian IR laws, and union involvement, had not been so draconian.... It may have made Australian based maintenance way more viable.

I wonder if the affected workers and union bosses are thinking to themselves that if they didn't push for so much, they may not have lost EVERYTHING!!

Boss

I would expect a lot of the worked will be snapped up by DJ, the timing is very good in that respect even if they have to move to SYD or BNE.

The union heavyweights don't care. They still get paid regardless of whether their members are suffering.

And no, they won't have a "magic moment" when they wonder if they caused the issues. It's that NASTY, NASTY Qantas that has stuffed the employees.

But most of DJ maintenance is done overseas, mainly in Kiwiland. From what I have read only day to day line maintenance is done in Aussie. DJ do not keep aircraft so long that they require heavy major checks. And doubt if DJ want to be at tainted by the QF union mentality

....One aircraft already has Virgin Australia titles alongside the basic V Australia livery. One B777-300ER will receive a full re-paint early next year when it goes into heavy maintenance with Air New Zealand Engineering Services....

Hence my comment on timing, they are actively chasing heavy maintenance staff to man the new Sydney maintenance base.

With Thompson's rant currently in progress, QF obviously looking to sweep this under the carpet!

We can all thank the unions for this..

I agree, employers should pay fairly and provide good conditions, but some of these unions are asking for greedy amounts of money and trying to hold onto ridiculous 20th century work practices in a 21st century world.

It's hard to believe that Qantas PR believed that they were going to get away with the old 'take out the trash day' trick by dumping the story 1 minute after Craig Thomson started his speech in Parliament. Although I reckon Craig Thomson is gonna get a lot more column inches tomorrow than the Qantas job cuts story so maybe it's helped them a bit.

Anyway, it's good to see Federal Secretary of the Baker's Union Steve Purvinas back on TV.

So when would you propose they announced it - usual time is 5.59pm Fridays.

Actually did my work experience at QF maintenance. The maintenance guys were not actually were not that well paid but did have some good perks. Plus the apprentices got paid peanuts. On a side note, some of the guys there were weirdos. Mostly the shop stewards and management and boy did they think highly of themselves.

This is not true, the average licensed engineer is on around $170k per year, certainly not peanuts. Management: Qantas Engineers among the ?Highest Paid in the World?
Their demand for 15% over 3 years is almost an increase of 9k per year.

With a falling industry in some ways, skyhigh fuel prices, general local and international economic slowdowns and LCC competition, you would think they would be glad to have a high paying stable job in a fragile economy (plus all the discount flying perks.etc.)...?

I know during the GFC my previous company froze salary increases for everybody for 2 years (after employees voted mostly in favour for it) as we all saw the greater good of doing it, the company didn't do any redundancies and we weren't an unionised industry, so its give and take a bit, we got to keep our jobs during a time of recession, that is why unions are out of touch with business, some are too greedy and end up shooting their 'members' in the foot.

If they get rid of maintenance at Tulla, does that free up some space for potential airport upgrades and such? I’m just thinking of the bigger picture here, more space to upgrade and build newer, better terminals, not that MEL is bad anyway, but could do with freeing up some space in SYD.

Have you been to where they are located, hardly packed out!

Purvinas has been talking on 774ABC. The usual spiel regarding why we must only have Australian engineers etc. But I did like his comment that Singaporean, Filipino, and Hong Kong engineers could not speak English well enough to read the technical manuals.
