IMHO.... If Australian IR laws, and union involvement, had not been so draconian.... It may have made Australian based maintenance way more viable.
I wonder if the affected workers and union bosses are thinking to themselves that if they didn't push for so much, they may not have lost EVERYTHING!!
But most of DJ maintenance is done overseas, mainly in Kiwiland. From what I have read only day to day line maintenance is done in Aussie. DJ do not keep aircraft so long that they require heavy major checks. And doubt if DJ want to be at tainted by the QF union mentalityI would expect a lot of the worked will be snapped up by DJ, the timing is very good in that respect even if they have to move to SYD or BNE.
....One aircraft already has Virgin Australia titles alongside the basic V Australia livery. One B777-300ER will receive a full re-paint early next year when it goes into heavy maintenance with Air New Zealand Engineering Services....
....The Tullamarine maintenance facility in Melbourne will be closed, and work will be based at Brisbane and at Avalon, near Geelong in Victoria....Work at Tullamarine will cease by August this year.

It's hard to believe that Qantas PR believed that they were going to get away with the old 'take out the trash day' trick by dumping the story 1 minute after Craig Thomson started his speech in Parliament. Although I reckon Craig Thomson is gonna get a lot more column inches tomorrow than the Qantas job cuts story so maybe it's helped them a bit.
Anyway, it's good to see Federal Secretary of the Baker's Union Steve Purvinas back on TV.
Actually did my work experience at QF maintenance. The maintenance guys were not actually were not that well paid but did have some good perks.

If they get rid of maintenance at Tulla, does that free up some space for potential airport upgrades and such? I’m just thinking of the bigger picture here, more space to upgrade and build newer, better terminals, not that MEL is bad anyway, but could do with freeing up some space in SYD.
