I haven't got a clue what you are trying to say here.

I suppose it was an eloquent way of saying that the English speakers of the world want English to be a global language, but are the ones who are the worst at using the language. On the other hand, look at most other languages, and the people who speak those have a lot more care and respect in using and preserving the value of their language.

The formalized clarity of writing is ok, though certainly open to interpretation..

I had to (twice) correct my daughter's teacher (when she was in grade grade 4) that Aswell is not one word , but in fact is two words.
Even then she wanted to check !

Not quite the same thing, but when I did my teacher training two years ago, I was told not to bother correcting grammar/spelling errors on assignments, as it took too much time. How on earth do they learn if they're never told what is right?

And for the record, this Gen Y did old fashioned spelling tests and times tables in primary school!

Ditto on your last point and on your first point.. that's interesting, all through primary school that was one thing teacher's certainly did. Maybe times have changed? Obviously by the time high school hits you're too late anyway

Languages live and die, they evolve and perish, they are a man-made artefact and there are probably more important things to worry about. Now communication on the other hand....

That's the spelling proficiency of your average early 20's office worker. I have a toothbrush I just bought from the supermarket that says on the packaging it's got an 'ergonomical design'. Spelling and grammar has not been taught at high school for just about my entire life which means anyone under the age of 60 has little grasp of the English language. I was lucky, I read books that were written by people much older than me. Welcome to the modern world.

I take a great deal of offence at this - I am well below 60 and have a reasonable grasp of spelling and punctuation - although the built in spell checker in Firefox does put me off with American English spelling.

Agree, I don't think the ability to spell Platinum or Frequent is age related. Likelihood to bother to proof read is probably a different matter...
