Op-ups flying VA on EY Metal

Has anyone had experience of getting an op-up when flying a Virgin-ticketed long-haul on EY metal? I'm just curious, as I'll be flying SYD-AUH-LHR return, by myself, in discount Y, as a VA Gold (possibly Platinum by then)?

We flew J to Europe on EY and my +1 was gold or plat with VA (i don't recall), we batted our eyelids at every checkin counter and always got landed with the last row of J for the entire trip. Was total BS. Not even a glimpse of an op-up and flights we're packed in J for all four legs.

However I am curious to know if any other VA people have received opups on EY

You would need to exclude the PE customers on the EY metal who recently flew SYD AUH on behalf of VA, they were given J by default.

Not quite what you are asking but me and my +1 travelled PE Syd-Auh-Lhr with the Auh-Lhr leg supposed to be in Y, but we were upgraded to J on check-in.

Ended up being $1300 each one way for a PE/J combo Syd-Lhr.

Mrs D-H and I were lucky, although we were flying on EY tickets, not a VA codeshare.

We were flying BOM-AUH earlier the year on the way back to MEL, on discounted Y fares. After I'd educated the local staff about the DJ-EY tie up (with screen shots of the relevant web-pages on my iPad!) and showed my Plat card, we were op-up'd to J.

I think the check in guy said that the aircraft had been changed from an A330 to an A320, so they were a bit short of seats...

No such luck on the AUH-MEL leg, but we did request and get bulkhead seats, and we were blessed with no babies...!

I presume the owner of the metal prefs their own punters over their code-share buddies, regardless of status...?

Well I guess I am one of the lucky ones. Last September I was on a Y+ (VA ticketed) from SYD to FRA via AUH. I was on VA metal to AUH and the EY metal to FRA with a Y boarding pass. I lined up with everyone else when the FRA flight was called. My boarding pass would not scan at the gate. The chap at the gate apologised and said sorry Mr. Bolthead but you will have to fly in business class. I didn't complain.

I am off again this year on the same yearly trip (for business) so I have my fingers crossed.

I am making the journey next week (SYD-AUH-LHR) in Y+ as a Velocity platinum member, I know that the EY leg is busy. I am hoping for an op up on the AUH-LHR leg as I find EY incredibly tight and uncomfortable. Will let you know how I get on.

I sympathise with your opinion on the seat pitch on Y on EY, Yank_in_Aus. It's pretty damn cramped. Always check in early and ask for an exit row, or try to do an online check in and advanced seat selection if you can... I don't know if you can or not. Is it possible to sort this out with the call center? Probably not.

Anyway, Haydensydney, I was travelling as a plat vel member with my mother and sister (neither of whom have any status) and using the priority boarding afforded to us by my status I watched as my two co pax were upgraded at the gate to J for a trip AUH-CDG. Totally awesome. I wasn't miffed at missing out as I was able to jag the exit row when checking in (which has HEAPS of space) and got what I paid for. My co-pax were beyond delighted.

We all got stiffed in stock standard Y on the way back CDG-AUH. I wouldn't fly a long long haul in Y with EY in a million years. VA is utterly superior, especially with status and fairly reliable access to the exit row for status Y pax flying long haul. Of course, PE is an excellent option on VA metal, which is what we booked for the AUH-SYD sector of the flights in the first place.

thanks bigbadbyrnes I have tried via call centre but the exit seats are reserved to Airport allocation so I will get there early. Out of curiosity, the exit rows on EY, are they more narrow than other Y seats or the same, as the controls on some airline's exit seats sticks out quite a bit.
