Since no one in Australia will ever have the political courage to build a second airport, why not do what has been done in cities such as HKG and build a third runway in the existing Sydney Airport - could be possible as Caltex plans to close Kurnell soon, or even by just extending the runways out further into Botany Bay.
There should be a plan effective immediately to reduce the curfew operating hours so it only operates Midnight or 1am-5am (or even abolish the damn curfew for quieter new aircraft such as the A380 and B787). By reducing the curfew, this opens new opportunities to expand flights into Asia, similar to how there is a huge bank of overnight flights from Melbourne into Asia. And this will be where most of the international growth will come for Australia into the future.
Second, build a high speed railway Brisbane-Newcastle-Sydney-Canberra-Melbourne. This would relieve pressure off Sydney airport without the need to build a second airport. Road and Air travel can coexist.
Canberra is NOT an alternative airport for Sydney. In the same way Munich is not an alternative for Frankfurt, Houston is not an alternative for Dallas and Washington is not an alternative for New York.
And to the whingers who live near Sydney Airport. You knowlingly live near an airport so GROW UP AND DEAL WITH IT! <--- Acknowledged - too harsh, apologies
