Big quake off Sumatra tonight

8.7 and similar spot to the big one that caused the tsunami in 2004.

Scary stuff, I hope anyone in the area or traveling that way stays safe

A Tsunami warning has now been issued for coughet.

The United States Geological Survey (usgs.gov) is reporting an initial quake strength of 8.7 Richter, with an epicentre about 500km southeast of Ambon Island.
The coughet Governor's office has confirmed that warnings have been issued along the west coast of coughet and that evacuation is underway.
It is not yet confirmed that a tsunami wave has been generated but if it has, it will hit just after 17:30 (5.50pm).
Thai PBS TV is reporting an expected wave height of 3 to 4 metres.

Apparently it could be felt in Singapore but I just checked with our office there and they didn't feel a tremble.

I have had quite a few colleagues from Jakarta, KL, Singapore and Bangkok all report feeling it. One colleague's parents live in Padang, Indonesia so they were quite close to it. She managed to get through to them they were all fine, said the power had gone out and they were heading for high ground. But they didn't think the tremors they felt were as bad as the 2004 or 2009 earthquake.

News breaking across TV now. Thinking of the people in Banda Aceh. Just imagine the fright they would be feeling having gone through the 2004 boxing day Tsunami.

Didn't feel anything here (centre of Singapore) either, although unless it was really bad subconsciously I would probably think any trembling is just due to another severe thunderstorm that are common at the time of day the earthquake happened. Reports from colleagues and their friends in northern Sumatra have not indicated too much drama, so fingers crossed for the whole region that there won't be aftershocks and serious tsunami won't eventuate.

Sea level readings indicate a tsunami was generated. It may
already have been destructive along some coasts.

Based on these data the threat continues for all coastal areas of
the indian ocean. For those areas - when no major waves have
occurred for at least two hours after the estimated arrival time
or damaging waves have not occurred for at least two hours then
local authorities can assume the threat is passed. Danger to
boats and coastal structures can continue for several hours due
to rapid currents. As local conditions can cause a wide
variation in tsunami wave action the all clear determination must
be made by local authorities.

Re: Big quake off Sumatra tonight

coughet airport closed due to tsunami warning.

At least this time there seems to be an early warning system in effect... Safe travels to those in the asian region.

8.8 aftershock now reported.

Was driving somewhere in the Genting area of Malaysia at the time. Didn't feel anything. Had to do a quick email and facebook update for my geographically challenged friends+family back home though!

Luckily no reports of damage or injuries at this stage.

A colleague on holiday in coughet with her three children had to evacuate to high ground for 5 hours, basically in the middle of the bush.

A million mosquito bites later, they were allowed back to the hotel.

Better safe then sorry, I guess
