O'Farrell slammed on Canberra airport | News.com.au

The interesting thing here is this quote by Albanese...
"The idea that people overseas will book a plane flight into Sydney to be told they are actually going to Canberra is like booking a plane to New York and landing in Washington DC."

It would be interesting to know how many people arrive at SYD as their final destination, and how many people travel onto other ports around AU. Obviously people who live in SYD would chose SYD, but if your end destination was ADL for example, would you really care if you went LAX-SYD-ADL or LAX-CBR-ADL?

Using the example above, if someone was going from LAX-LHR, they probably wouldn't care if they were going LAX-IAD-LHR vs LAX-JFK-LHR...

Would a Qantas First Lounge be built in Canberra?

Max Moore-Wilton happens to be on the board of NSW Infrastructure and a friend of O'farrell. I think he has a small conflict of interest and should step away from trying to influence the opinion of the premier when it comes to airport infrastructures.

One the one hand: Overseas visitors often don't even know how to pronounce Canbewhat? so yes, I'd agree with this statement from a foreigner's point of view.

On the other hand: Given how ridiculous far some airports are from the actual city, simply call it Sydney or "Australian capital airport" or something like that and connect it with a high speed rail line which is what I've been suggesting for years now. Why not go one step further and build an entirely new airport somewhere in the middle of nowhere on the way between Sydney and our lovely capital? High speed rail both ends, hardly any noise complaints from residents, endless opportunities for adding runways and extending terminals plus an economic boost for pretty much empty rural areas. Of course, do it right- close Sydney and Canberra airports at the same time and do not allow any flights between these cities any more.

One article I read suggested a high speed rail link SYD-CBR-MEL would cost less than half a new airport and could relieve congestion at SYD.
Anyway Barry went to the election saying there wouldn't be a second airport for Sydney so now its wrong that a pollie actually keeps his promise?

Rightly so, O'Farrell should be slammed. In theory a 1hr high speed train service to Sydney could succeed, but we live in the real world where politicians are too scared to make the right decision for the greater good, at the risk of upsetting their election prospects.

What will be the extra cost of the train. It's already $15 odd bucks for a slow suburban train from Mascot to city.

Be bold and build a 2nd Sydney Airport before the fat lady sings over every via option left.

Personally I do not care that much about transit points unless I was doing something specific.

I would not want to be dropped off in Canberra though to make my way back to SYD....

There was talk of a new airport on the flat plain on the south side of Goulburn (look to left when you drive south along the freeway at the second Goulburn exit).

Often overseas visitors assume Sydney is the capital of Sydney. By flying them into Canberra they actually get to see our capital.

Name it Sydney-Canberra Airport. Problem solved. Wouldn't be the first time an airport has been named after two cities. And a VHS train into Sydney, with a stop on the way for access to the west and south. This is a bold suggestion that I'd support.

No government in Australia will ever have the balls or guts to build a second Sydney airport, its as simple as that. In fact, we are so conservative that I might as well go live like I did two decades ago.

Isn't that a lake?

It wouldn't bother me if I was merely connecting through in fact I would prefer it to the awfulness that is connecting through Sydney. I wouldn't ever fly there though if I was terminating in Sydney. Plus the fog is an issue with Canberra so you couldn't ever rely on it for morning flights.

That is true, most early morning flights where the plane + crew o'nighted in CBR is usually OK (the one which I will usually take if doing anything important at my destination or connecting to another flight), but any flight which is relying on an arriving a/c is prone to being delayed in winter...

A very good point. People will balk at arriving in CBR and being charged >$100 for a fast train ride to SYD. The current train cost SYD-CBR is what $50 for an adult?

Or any other infrastructure project.
