I'm surprised that the zoning was not applied to J rather than Y, as I would have thought that would make more sense.

Having said that, as noted earlier, you're never going to be able to find a way to avoid all the other problem passengers.

The seating on the MH A380 has F upstairs and J downstairs, so I guess if they did it to J as well as F they would have locked out all the premium fare paying parents.

But I guess it is a case of 'you can't please all the people all of the time'.

It sounds as though kids are banned not only from the F cabin, but the whY cabin upper deck which is near the F cabin so it's more like there's an exclusion zone around F.

That could be true. It may have nothing to do with Y, just keeping the Fs happy

Other way around. F is on the main deck, and J is upper deck.

Main Deck is 8 seats first class + 350 seats economy
Upper deck is 66 business class + 70 seats economy


(I suspect the upper deck economy may have been pencilled in as premium economy at one point in time...)

I love this new policy from MAS. I find screaming and misbehaved children highly irritating on a flight.

Couldn't agree more! In my eyes, parents who have to drag their poor infant kids onto a flight which only hurts their ears, totally traumatizes them and therefore makes them cry for hours just in order to go onto a selfish holiday can very happily "enjoy" their little devils while I am sitting in piece and quiet upstairs.

I seriously wished more airlines implemented a solution like that: I am thinking separated sound-proof zones at the back of the planes, filled with colored play balls and stuff like that for the little ones (and their parents :evil to enjoy!

I'm Sympathetic to patents with young children as my sister has two 'difficult' toddlers. Some good headphones and I'm usually right.

However the plan by MH makes sense.

This is enough to make me switch to MH for long haul, provided I can get upper deck seats. Flew with them to Europe a few years ago and was very impressed. Fingers crossed the OW link goes through soon.

I'm in SE Asia current and on my flights here I got the trifecta - 3 screaming kids in 3 flights Not looking forward to making a perfect record tonight!

I think it's a great idea, I would consider MH for a long haul.
Unlike the disruptive loud adults who usually get drunk and crash out early on, the screaming kids saga (and kicking the back of chairs, running up and down the aisles, throwing stuff... i once woke with a start when a wet dummy landed on my cleavage) can go on for hours and hours if not the entire flight.

No, I was reading the story on Australian Business Traveller and the restriction applies only to the upstairs economy cabin. You can still book kids under 12 and babies into business class.

The no-go areas for children are:
* first class, no babies allowed because they have no bassinets but if you want to book a seat for a id 2-12 then go for it, and here's hoping the spoilt brat appreciates it!
* upstairs economy, no babies or kids under 12 allowed UNLESS the downstairs cabin is fully booked for bassinets in which case they will mount a bassinet upstairs, and if downstairs is fully booked for seats then they will book kids 2-12 upstairs

They could also implement a no babies/children policy in business class on the A380. Business is divided into 2 sections on the upper deck. They could make the first zone (of only 18 seats) free of babies and children. That would make those passengers flying for business very very happy.
