It's not uncommon for AA to say in their initial boarding calls "we welcome Executive Platinum members and US Military Personnel in uniform to board via the Priority AAcess lane". Apparently in First you can board at this stage but they don't always announce it.

The call for First is usually made before that one IME.

As an Emerald I board when the call for Executive Platinum goes out (unless I'm in First). Never been knocked back.

(in the US because everyone insists on taking the kitchen sink onboard I'm always at the gate when boarding commences).

As for the original question I'll do #1 on international flights where priority boarding isn't in operation (happens on trans-tasman from time to time), but never on domestic. I won't push in on the aerobridge though.

No that's just plain rude. What this person is doing is barging past not only people from the general boarding queue but people who have already gone ahead of him/her in the Premium boarding lane! If he/she has some dire need to be one of the first onboard the aircraft they really should be at the gate at minus 30 so they board when the F/A's arrive at the gate & the flight opens.This behaviour is textbook DYKWIA material.

though, to be honest, it isn't an inflatable, & only worn for boarding when I'm really knackered & don't care about appearances, & running out of hands (too many goats).
And one memorable time I WAS being escorted by an airline rep.

BKK flying BA F we received no PB until we were in the crush of the air bridge. Ground staff walked up from the plane shouting F J & PE passengers to use the left hand side.....it was a total joke. It was like pushing in a scrum against the All Blacks & was as far from PB one could get.

If you don't do PB at the gate don't bother.

The way I look at it, if you want full PB, then be there a few minutes before the scheduled boarding time. Otherwise, my experience is that PB is still better than standing at the end of the Y queue even if you have to wait in the line on the aero bridge. At least when you enter the plane, and you are in F or J, at least you can tell then what you want to drink on the way.

Recently I noted that with AA on a SC run, bin space was a HUGE ISSUE on every flight to the extent that the dragons at the gate were physically separating oversized carry on from pax and sending for check in as normal baggage. Something about the yanks that they need possessions to be happy and over possessive about the bin space above them that they considered to be THEIRS.

The only complaint that I had with AA is when I boarded towards the end of the flight the bins in F were all full (smart Y pax filling it up before they got to row 9999 to find all the bins were full), so I guess if you have a larger roller with another bag almost as big sitting on top and are in F you may just want to fight your way to the front to claim the bin space near to you.

It is a few years since I lived in the USA but the issue for me was about my baggage arriving at the destination at the same time I did. When I checked luggage it would routinely turn up on a later flight so carry on became the only option.

Good point, didn't think of this as a reason for upsized carry on and you could well be correct. Not sure what AA charge for baggage as I flew F all the time, I guess your valid point, together with Y pax perhaps avoiding a second bag charges by using carry on baggage, means that there is a heavy reliance, much more noticeable than here in AUS, for bin space, guess the time of year also, seemed to be a lot of overcoats being stuffed into the bins, to the extent that the FAs physically removed them and said "who owns this - could you please place it on your lap"

When PB was first introduced, it seemed to work, but I've had two fails this week. My SYD-MEL flight was delayed 30 mins and despite getting to the gate 10 mins prior to the rescheduled boarding time, and despite the sign, the crowd spilled across both lanes. In fact, the PB line was full of a tourist group. It moved slower than the standard line. I commented politely to the FA when scanning my card that "Priority Boarding didn't seem to work today" and she simply shrugged.

Today on my MEL-SYD, I still arrived 5 mins before the boarding time and at Gate 3 the PB line was simply just another queue. I simply stood to the side of the PB line, the FA saw my WP bag tag and waved for me to board first.

The FAs seems disinclined to enforce it, even after it is announced and that's the actual problem.

Fifty/fifty results for me over the past two days. Smooth operation of Priority Security and Priority Boarding out of Nelbourne on Thursday. Nothing at all at Security or boarding in Adelaide today.

However, I did have a chance to comment on both issues (PBS and PS) in a "How was Qantas?" survey today.

I used the PB line in Brisbane today as the general line was as long as the terminal. No one in the PB line (or extra staff to scan the pass) so I let an elderly couple from the general boarding lane go first anyway before the agent called me forward, getting me and my colleagues BP's scanned - at which point the old lady I let go in front told me off for pushing in on the line.. The sign is pretty big, but it does feel odd having to push in at the front. I don't want PB to go away, but perhaps some friendly enforcement / education wouldn't go astray.

Was it a 734 by any chance?

Did they make a PB call with the usual "J, WP & OWE may use the Premium boarding lane to the right" spiel. Perhaps the elderly lady didn't have her hearing aid turned up loud enough. :shock:
