Hello All,

We have a pending family holiday to Florida and for the sake of minds what would to the best route (direct) if possible and hte best way to entertain a first time flyer on such a looong trip (he is 3) god help us! :(.

Might depend on just where in Australia you are departing from and where in Florida you want to arrive.

If you want to stick with QF/OneWorld, probably direct to DFW and then to MIA. I haven't entered the US at DFW but anywhere else probably has to be better than LAX.

Can't offer any suggestions on how to handle the little tacka. Might be worth paying for exit row seats.

Your best flight is via Dallas direct then on to Miami? / Orlando? You are looking at some serious travel time. We have done this previously with young kids and recommend that you keep their sleep routine - don't let them board tired as the intial excitement kept them awake longer and made it more unbarable. The next gem is my wife came up with, she bought several new small toys that she produced at different intervals with kept them entertained. I also recommend not keeping them confined, but only walk then when you say not on their whim. So between the Kids & cartoons TV channels available - you should make it to Florida alive. Enjoy.

Departing Melbourne to orlando, FL. sorry for lack of flight info!

QF fly Brisbane - DFW. Otherwise you are stuck with LAX (QF, Virgin, United, Delta) or SFO (United)

With a young child you are not eligible for an exit row

If price is the main factor consider a holiday package (accommodation & flights [Disney?])

I think I'd probably try to avoid the domestic-to-international dance at SYD - as appealing as arriving in to DFW vs. LAX is, outbound immigration at SYD is moderately awful unless you're adept at it. If the dates work, you can get the following routing on VA: MEL-LAX-MCO.

Thank you all for all the help, we have found a route that is Mel / Dallas / MCO however, being a aeronautical boffin, not really happy with QF flying this sector as "in the manual" the sector Mel to Dallas direct (non stop) is in my aeronautical opinon is a good stretch for this aircraft:).

The flight is via SYD, there is no MEL-DFW flight. As a parent of twin 4 year olds this flight is a godsend, to transit in SYD and DFW is so much better than LAX. My wife nearly passed out waiting that long in line at LAX.

Yeah, must be older than 15 to sit in an exit row.

Are you considering taking a booster seat? (some children sleep much better in their own car seats if they are used to it already, depends how much time they spend in the car). Another option is the CARES restraint.
If you are flying Y, then the armrests will fold up so if it's 2 + child, you should be fine (well seat wise, the child will be).

If you are using cars in the US taking your booster (in the hold) is a good idea in any case, as you can't guarantee the quality of the ones you hire.

Don't take any cough like Lego or things where bits come off (hunting around under the seats for small toys is no fun). The iPad is your friend. Coloring in is good too.

Don't forget the Nurofen (just make sure it's only the 100ml bottle )

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

If taking a booster seat for the hire car only then consider purchasing one on arrival. You can get good seats quite cheaply in the US.

Were doing that with our pram in July. Just gonna buy one over there. But we're taking our booster. The wife wanted to take the one from her car (the cheaper one), but Little Miss prefers the one from my car (the nice cushy one). So I guess we're taking the good one.

I hope it survives, lol. But at least she'll be familiar with it and comfy. And it's all set up for her.
