Brilliant news. Now, if only they could get a decent OOL property! (the sheraton is just awful!).

Looks to be $295 for a base room for both properties, jumping to $550 on weekends which is a bit of a steep hike.

Given that the full refurb of Sheraton Surfers is due to be completed by April 2012, I can't see that it will still be awful.
The basics of great position and big rooms will remain but be updated.
A friend of mine tells me the restaurant has now been refurbished , and is in her words "great".
Hope so as I will be staying there in July.
Now bring on the Sheraton Melbourne. :D

Once SPG leave a city in terms of a brand, they generally dont come back, so I dont think we will be seeing Sheratons in HBA/DRW/BNE/TSV/PER or MEL again, at least that seems to be the case in Australia.

When its those prices, using Cash and Points (4,800 + USD$90) will make these properties very enticing. I always needed an excuse to visit the mountains so looks like I'll be seeing them very soon.

good news...
bit expensive for a mattress run!

Again, C&P will be good if you have any, and these stays do count towards status.

Maybe they will be back in Melbourne

Cool, any chance for BNE, we are awash with Accor after their aquisition of Mirvac's properties?

Sheraton are opening a new property in Melbourne next year.

Well the site for the Sheraton Melbourne is presently a hole in the ground. Building will comprise hotel and apartments. Its seems enough apartments were sold to get the building started; or lets hope so. I note the SPG website is now showing opening date of November 2013.
It was previously showing as February 2013, and when my Starwood Privilege membership was renewed in December they gave me two extra months, so I could experience the new Sheraton Melbourne! Will now be interesting to see if this hotel is ever built, I certainly hope so.
Australia, apart from Sydney, has too few Starwoods.

Surprising. SPG have bigger fish to fry, like opening 12.7 properties per week in China ... (OK I exaggerate but that is where there focus is atm).

We were supposed to get a Westin in Brisbane (in Elizabeth St, possite the back of the Myer Centre) - SPG even had a Westin Brisbane website operating! It was to be in a mixed use building, with the hotel having the top 20 floors or so - but when the GFC hit, the property developer pulled the pin on construction, so that was the end of that plan. :(

I know quite a number of Platinum Privilege members (myself included) have told SPG we won't be renewing our memberships until Starwood has a Brisbane property. I'm told Starwood did look at taking over Rydges at South Bank, but that fell through.

You forgot ASP and AYQ.Stayed at them all.
However MEL has a Westin, there was one proposed for BNE as well so SPG can come back.Good to see them adding some properties at last.

Does anyone else find these 2 properties as SPG rather odd? For an international chain to not have a property in BNE with the demise of the planned Westin, the transfer of the Sheraton Perth to a Pan Pacific, and no property in Canberra, I fail to understand why they would pick the Blue Mountains?

Or does the property pay SPG to for access to the brand?

THe property generally pays,
and is also required to meet certain standards and invest in IT systems.

Particularly in Asia you see a lot of privately owned hotels moving in and out of programs.

Have not stayed at those! The Westin in MEL was there before the Sheraton left, so not really the same, regardless its good to see some growth with them, they might get me back as a plat one day, the Sheraton BNE sure looked after me before it went to the dark side. the Royal Suite was very special, as was the breakfast champers buffet! Sigh!

As Kitkat mentioned, hope it does not suffer the same fate as the BNE westin.
Ah yes, I remember that...wow.

I'd still be loathe to leave the Hilton BNE as my favourite, as the Sheraton was when it was at its zenith.

I suppose if I was going to have a long weekend break in SYD, I'd be temped but not at those prices - unless I bought the points to use.
