Just a quick question...I am flying into Sydney international shortly and have a connection to Melbourne with virgin. I am wondering what the cutoff time is to check in the luggage at the international transfer lounge with virgin? I can't see a time on the website and don't really want to have to cart all my luggage to domestic terminal.thanks

I flew in from LA on Virgin in October with a one-hour transit time for a SYD/MEL flight and missed it due to air traffic issues and ground clearances. We then couldn't get on for another two flights. I think one hour is too tight. Remember you have to get your bags in Sydney and go through immigration and customs. We were in J and still didn't have a hope of making our connection. I think you need two hours.

If you are booked on the same itinery you need to have your bags at the transfer desk by 1 hour of your domestic flight - it's different to the recommended connection time.

Mind you, they will rebook you if you won't make your formal connection due to delays. They advised me of my flight changes like 1 hour into my AUH - SYD flight ;)

On an inbound international flight, you will still have to exit the overseas VA aircraft, collect your bags and do all the entry clearance stuff, then board a bus to the domestic terminal. Even if you exit the air bridge and see the VA transfer staff in the internation termional, you will still be pushing it to do all that stuff and get over to the domestic. And if you have any inflight delays coming in from overseas you're kaput. Maybe it's less of a risk coming from AUK, but from LAX, I don't know. I'm booking only direct inbound flights to Melbourne next time. Transiting through Sydney or Brisbane after a long flight is a nightmare.

2-3 hours is what I personally like to have available to me for international to domestic transfers at SYD .. means that I'm not being rushed, and I get a chance to grab some brekkie and a shower at the domestic lounge before my flight.

I did this exact transfer last year (assume you are coming off a VA flight from LAX?).

I think I had 90 minutes which was a bit of a rush - there's a certain amount of panic waiting for that stupid transfer bus. I think my domestic flight was boarding by the time I got to the gate. I was in a smelly daze by that stage.

It was not a pleasant experience.

Yep same flight. We had the dumbest travel agent.

Then your domestic flight will be at about 7.30/8am. I wouldn't stress if you miss your flight -there's one every 15 minutes during morning peak on weekdays. If you have a intl booking they will simply put you on the next flight.

I have 1 hour 45 min from landing to clear customs and transfer to my 9 pm flight.....I think im not gonna make it! Thanks for the feedback!

Made it! Zipped through immigration, customs and arrived at transfer desk within 25 minutes...must be record time. Thats 1 hour 20 min before flight. Excellent! Think I was very lucky!
