Baggage Allowance Changes

Despite being told by a QF phone agent that, no, my bags wouldn't be checked through "if you leave the airport", ...
The agent was preaching the party line.

In reality they are not supposed to check luggage though if you intend to leave the airport. I would simply not tell them; they are unlikely to know if you do or not and it saves such issues.

Finally. Makes sense, was getting tired of putting my golf set together with SWMBO's half set in the same big bag and then using the other bag for clothes

This is a bit too 'ontopic' to be 'offtopic' but effective 18 Oct 2011 QF have increased the baggage allowance for Gold fflyers "in response to customer and airport employee feedback". They could've saved themselves the grief if they asked for employee feedback before introducing the policy on 01 June.

New allowance is 2 pieces up to 23 kilos each piece (excluding Mt Hotham, Olympic Dam & Lord Howe Island) for domestic travel.

International allowance is 46 kilos (was 32 kgs) to Asia/Europe/Africa. Travel to/from the Americas remains unchanged - 3 pieces @ 23 kg.

Effective 17 Octoer 2011 frequent flyer silver, QF Club & OW Ruby can now access Premium Service Desk/Bag Drop again which I suppose is good news for them & not so good news for SG, WP & J as the queues will now be longer.

Refresh my memory - what was the old allowance for SG? (except for a SG flying in J, where the allowance was the "maximum" of 2 x 32 kg IIRC).

Mainly only for Dom->Int check-ins, otherwise I don't see why the savvy QFF elite can't effectively use the other NGCI components to fly through check-in.

I have to say that my experience using NGCI since its inception has been naught but brilliant, including Q Bag Tags. I know this contrasts quite a bit with other members here, but so be it.

Gold was 1 x 32kg, and I am sure the baggage handlers were mightily pleased by that

This 23kg vs 32kg stuff is getting a bit messy.

That was my point. Again WP got nothing.

Well that's just clutching at straws.

Not that the allowance WPs were given for now was generous enough as it is, unless you're moving house or are a very, very serious photographer. (Or a golfer / sportsperson...)

Judging by your glib comment, it would've been better to keep the status quo and the old SG allowance so that the WPs don't keep complaining they're getting nothing all the time.

Heck, why don't we just cut down the allowances for QP, PS and SG so that the chasm between WP and the rest gets appreciably big enough to appease the WPs?

Further comment will be withheld because I will be banned if I divulge...

I'm still POed that buying a J class ticket no longer gives you any extra baggage pieces over discount Y - a fine example of a Qantas "enhancement". All you get is a largely useless extra 9kg. I've never checked in a bag weighing over 30kg and I'm usually down around 18kg for my packed suitcase.

I think it's a real enhancement.

I look forward to it - as one day, when I'm not WP anymore - it will be quite useful :)

+1 (vigorously). And allowing the lower ranks back into the premium queues also meets one of the objections many of us had when the "enhancement" was introduce.

Well done, QF.:D

I really don't understand why Qantas perseveres with current Platinum status.

It would be much easier if Gold was given all current Platinum benefits and then everyone can be happy....

Except the current platinums

So, correct me if I'm wrong, but the premium check-in desks now apply to everyone, except Silver and your occasional flyer. Have I got this right? And this is for domestic and international?

No - it is everyone apart from Bronze - back to the way it was before NGCi was launched.
