Currently looking at booking one-way HKG-SIN and SIN-MEL tickets.

The SIN-MEL ticket is going to cost me about A$500 for a 30SC on a Discount Economy (Super Saver) fare. By contrast, the *Asia flight HKG-SIN will be less than A$300, half the flying time/distance, yet net 40SCs. Admittedly the SIN-MEL fare earns 3,749 points whereas the HKG-SIN fare only nets 1,601.

Seems bizarre that flying the LCC is more rewarding from a SC point of view. Especially attractive when the alternative is to pay more than double to fly CX for half the SCs on HKG-SIN

All depends on fare basis, you would be paying a economy max fare on Jetstar to net 40 SCs, but FWIW is often available for around $150 AUD to net 20 SCs. As for SIN-MEL can also net the same 30 SCs on Jetstar for around $300-$350 AUD in some instances. But could draw similar comparisons for domestic Australian flights as well.

Just for ref, Isn't HKg to Mel on Qantas about $600 AUD and 60 sc's and about 4800 points?

Discount economy return HKG-MEL/SYD is roughly 7200 points for a bronze, and 60 SCs. They are around $850 - 900 AUD after tax while on normal sales (and possibly cheaper during special promotion periods).

And for SIN-HKG return, 3K starter plus with earnings at discount Y is roughly $370 SGD. This includes free standard seat selection, a free meal, and priority booking. The cheapest eligible CX fare that earns the same SCs but 50% points is roughly $700 SGD.

However, it's not all bad for CX. Some of their credit card specials can get you a SIN-BKK J fare for $588 SGD return, which is a great bargain if you need 120 SCs. And, if you do that 5 times, plus 2x SIN-KUL return 3K starter plus flights... who would've thought that you could retain SG by spending just $2500 AUD?

If you visit Asia often, CX offer some very lucrative journeys home in J class thats cheaper than JQ *class via SIN ;), you just have to depart from somewhere via HKG. Around $1K each way. Some destinations even offer a non red eye alternative:

The only problem is, I need to get to TPE from SIN first, and vice versa at the end of the trip... :(

That's amazing value mate, thanks for posting this. I vaguely remember someone else saying that CX offered cheap flights out of TPE - anyone know why is that?

Am I right in assuming that StarClass tickets always earn double the SCs of economy?

Was reading Frequent Flyer - About the Program - Benefits & Privileges - Jetstar Status Credits and noted that no StarClass SC earn is listed for MEL-SIN. I would assume its 120 though?
Business (formerly known as StarClass) now has two categories. The normal "Business" product do not offer lounge access or QFF points/status. The "business max" ticket offers QFF points/status at per QF J earn rates, however, the costs of taking up the "max" package can be somewhat hideous at times.

QFF classic awards would serve you well ;)
Come to think of it, 45-50k points ASA plus $2200 AUD is not a bad deal for 360SCs given my location, although still quite a bit more costly than doing the CX SIN-BKK discounted J run 3 times (roughtly $1500 AUD and zero points outlay). Still, as nice as BKK is, doing a run there 3 times is probably a little silly unless there's an actual reason of being there.
