The rise of the Bogan traveller

I was trying to make was to understand why you think that because you don't travel on
LCC's that you wouldn't come into contact with bad behaviour.

Please forgive me, I feel like I'm butting into a personal sub-thread here. Its a subject that I think about though so if you'lll indulge me.

I think making choices like this is about making probability estimates. Whats the chances of having less offensive (to you) passengers in J of QF compared to Y on TT? Its not necessarily a judgment on the value/personalilty/boganness (?) of the other passengers, I rarely make stand up judgments like this though occasionally I may attempt at humour along these lines and fail dismally, but its a estimate on how _I_ am likely to respond to others in certain social situations (ie; its my problem not theirs).

Its surely true that you can meet people who offend you in all areas of life, but there are choices you can make which reduce the probability of this, though you can never remove the potential entirely.

So whats a "bogan" anyway? Oh, its a Westie from Blacktown who doesnt dress well, hasn't shaved, has tatts and looks a bit inbred. Big deal. If I have to sit next to him I don't care as long as he doesn't play his iPod at full volume, doesn't smell bad, doesn't fart or burp and just keeps to himself. If I have to sit in front of him I don't care as long as he doesn't kick the seat. Apart from that I don't care how he looks or what "social class" he is in, as long as he doesn't inconvenience me. And there are plenty of non-bogans who have too much to drink and get loud and obnoxious, play their iPod at full blast so you can hear them etc.

Really I think that criticising them on the basis of social class is a bit weak. And anyway isnt it better that these days almost anybody can travel to visit friends or family? Thats got to be better for everybody.

The following definition appears on Wikipedia (and similar definitions appear elsewhere - I did my research as I know that Wiki should never alone be considered the "source of truth"!):

The term bogan is Australian slang, usually pejorative or self-deprecating, for an individual who is recognised to be from a lower class background or someone whose limited education, speech, clothing, attitude and behaviour exemplifies such a background.[SUP][1]
[/SUP]In Australia, "bogan" is generally synonymous with the older term "yobbo" (or "yob"). In New South Wales, "westie" has a similar meaning; this term refers to people from Western Sydney

Later on in the article it mentions the somewhat newer term of CUB or Cashed Up Bogan. The LCC has not been the cause of bogans travelling, the existance of the CUB shows that alone - it's just that now non-CUB bogans are able to travel with the advent of the LCC, and potentially when flying a LCC there is a higher percentage of them. CUBs have been traveling for years, as many of the stories on here about poorly behaved passengers demonstrate (in everything from Y to F). And as others have pointed out, it's not just the bogans causing trouble - in many cases its the DYKWITIA element (note the extra letter - Don't You Know Who I THINK I Am).

It is good to get one over an example of a DYKWITIA.Travelling back to BNE this week we were behind an academic who i have met but did not acknowledge my existence either in the J lounge or on board. As our luggage came out first we were first out of the terminal,he was close behind.we regularly use a limo service to and from BNE and know the owner. On this day we were picked up in the stretch(no extra charge). But I would have paid just for the look on the DYKWITIA's face!

I don't believe that all will agree but whether you like it or not bogan is a reality. I prefer to call them yobbos or westies if you like.

Now the bogans I have met do not know how to behave in public. It is that simple. They should not be allowed out of the house let alone out of Australia to be representatives of our country. It is that simple. If you know how to behave in public and have good manners and dress sense then you are not a bogan. It is that simple.

If that reality hurts then perhaps it is time to start educating them on manners and behaviour before allowing them out of the country or even out in public for that matter.

BTW, I don't buy the anti-bogan stuff (even if it's easy and mostly accurate) -- money and education doesn't buy you class.
But it does buy you a better class of enemy-with apologies to Spike Milligan.

You will never see more bogans than the mostly Pommy( - now please note not a slash at Poms, cos I are one - just where the show's made) travellers on the cable show 'Airline' - I think it's EasyJet. Obviously an extremely low LCC - seems many folks not travelled much and have only the haziest grasp of airline rules and scheduling, let alone manners. Some of the most impressive dummy spits I've ever seen! Worth a look just for a laugh. And a feeling of superiority!;)

This particular group ( CUB) can be spotted without fail on a JQ flight AKL/ ZQN and vv. during Ski season.
I suppose I"ll have to confess that the Shrek family use this route but are always courteous to fellow passengers and crew ;)

Love the show. Totally misplaced superiority......I can't believe some people can be so stupid, but then again I don't deal with the public so probably lead a sheltered life.

In the UK I think they are known as chavs.

I will admit that the 'cashed-up bogan' thing rings very true with me, have seen more than a few of those, it all comes down to manners and behaving in a civilised thoughtful manner which is something too few people know how to do these days.

  • Consider those behind you before you push your seat back. For instance, are they eating?

I wish that someone had told this to the guy in Business Class recently when I flew Melbourne / Brisbane. He sat down, pushed his seat way back and it stayed that way the whole flight. Luckily, there is some space in Business Class, but he certainly had no consideration for the person sitting behind him.

There's a huge difference between being ignorant and inconsiderate to being bogan. People from all classes are ignorant and inconsiderate.

There's also a difference between being a bogan and being totally bloody disgusting.
Man urinates in plane aisle, let off with warning from Jetstar | News.com.au

JETSTAR have been criticised for being too lenient on an alleged drunk passenger who urinated on fellow travellers. The incident occurred six hours into a flight from Auckland to Singapore, when a male flyer is alleged to have relieved himself in the aisle, nzherald.co.nz reports.
The spray is said to have soaked a man’s leg and a female passenger’s scarf.

Passengers said the man was seen mixing whiskey in a Burger King cup with a friend before the incident.

"Everyone was yelling at him and he slowly became aware that he was being uncouth,” passenger Amos Chapple told nzherald.co.nz.

Cheers

Some people will actually pay good money for that!

I wonder what compensation the affected passengers will receive ? A sandwhich voucher or something is my guess.
