Virgin Australia announces strategic alliance with Singapore Airlines

So with code share, SQ gets to fly direct from AUS to USA using VA.
Basically you can only codeshare on international flights where you have the right to operate yourself. So SQ can't code on our trans-Pacific services (or those of United Airlines). However AFAIK KF members will be able to earn points/status on our trans-Pac services. This will not make UA very happy with its *Alliance partner.

The Australian Business Traveller (live on the scene of the announcement) seems to have confirmed that VA Gold and Platinum members will get access to SilverKris Lounges. If this means the real SIN T3 ones then *A eat your heart out.

I HIGHLY doubt it would be the SKL J Lounge in T2/3. Most likely the *G Lounge next door.

I'd be surprised - I didn't think Krisflyer Gold was enough to get you through those doors!.

Which is why I find it odd that DJ formed a partnership with Delta rather than UA.

Particularly with the AirNZ tie-up, I would have thought partnerships with *A airlines without actually joining (so as not to annoy Etihad) would have been preferable.

Re: VA to partner with SQ

Star alliance next?
We can only live in hope. Sadly I think that's something that's a good few years away yet, if ever.

Still, I'm excited about this new agreement. I travel a lot with Singapore Airlines and being able to book connecting domestic flights and having harmonised schedules will be very useful for me.

Time for some more buttered popcorn as another episode of the Bold and the Beautiful starts. :p

This is great news. Virgin are really going from strength to strength!

Re: # Virgin Australia announces strategic alliance with Singapore Airlines

Looks like things are really starting to heat up.
Sunday - Platinum
Monday - Improved SC Earning System
Tuesday - Codeshare with SQ
Wednesday - Star Alliance?

you forgot:
Tuesday - Codeshare with SQ AND also the birthday of one of the DJ social media team! :D

Finally - I don't think Wednesday about any Star Alliance announcement - though interesting to see what this announcement is on 14th June for some AFFers re: Velocity Rewards' post?:mrgreen::mrgreen: Five members - five points on a STAR? ;)

How bout five fingers on a hand, five members on a basketball team, five letters in the word.... ;)

Re: VA to partner with SQ

I LOVE IT!!!

Please join *A next... Ah this is awesome... competition is the best.

Re: VA to partner with SQ

Already being discussed here:

John Borghetti has said that the issue of Virgin joining Star Alliance is a matter for 2012 and beyond.

Me thinks both JB and AJ have many cards still to be played and are keeping them VERY close to their chest. This is High Stakes Joker and bluffing is an accepted part of the game.

Remember it will be late 2013 until MH join OW and it is now 2012, so this statement by JB tells me the SQ deal is a precursor to DJ joining *A.

My money would be on DJ joining *A before MH joins OW.

(I tried to get both 'caek' and 'flying' in to the one picture .. :p )

Re: VA to partner with SQ

But it isn't a matter of Virgin just "joining" Star Alliance, all the other members have to approve the move and as has been pointed out already the Virgin/Delta link up is hardly going to make United jump for joy so they would be unlikely to support Virgin joining so there needs to be a fair bit of work done before any bid for Virgin to join could succeed I reckon.
JB has said it's not something they are focussing on yet and I see no reason to disbelieve him.

Think about the regulatory obstacles we have had with DL on both sides of the Pacific, then think about how it would look if we tried with UA.

Re: VA to partner with SQ

Going back a ways now I remember there being animated discussion on FlyerTalk when *A started making changes to the way new membership was handled, due to the size of the alliance. One of those changes was no longer requiring unanimous agreement for a new member, so possibly even if there was an objection (I think most likely would be UA) it might not matter.
