A faulty security screening machine has disrupted flights at Sydney Airport this afternoon.
An airport spokesman said about 16 passengers walked through without being properly screened, so management decided to clear the area and rescreen all passengers.

Hope it doesn't disrupt the evening peak too much and that no AFFers are caught up in the mess.

I only caught a blurb on the news but heard something about pax heading over to the QF terminal to avoid the waits, so which terminal is closed?

ABC is reporting that it is Terminal 2, affecting Virgin, Jetstar and Tiger flights.
Passengers are already twittering their complaints!

If I had to vacate the lounge to reclear security again, I would be pretty pi$$ed off; likewise, if I had already boarded my flight...happens to regularly, it seems:evil:

Terminal 2 confirmed. A few flights diverted to Canberra, Brisbane and Melbourne, with delays on Sydney bound departues from most ports. I'd suggest there would be a few cancelled flights this evening.

At least that new premium security line into the lounge would have saved you a little bit of time, though I’d have probably tried to take a drink for the wait outside with me :p

I changed my plans for this week on the weekend, was meant to fly out of T2 this afternoon, I must have known.

Dimwits. A whole 7 pax missed the xray machine. So what?
We used to xray/screen no-one and nothing ever happened then.
Rather than acceptable risk, they run by absolute rules.

This has cost a lost of money, for zero gain, and someone needs to loose their job for
'cover thy cough' decision making, especially as airport workers are NOT screened.

Interesting view. Nothing happened when they didn't screen? So those hijackings in the 60s and 70s didn't happen?

As for airport workers. Aren't they subject to security vetting?

To avoid all this cough i would run the risk of flying with these 7 people, they could be on my plane for all i care... Afterall Australia is ground zero when it comes to hijackings and nutbags eh....

But yes, this security hysteria has got everyone paranoid...

So people had to overnight in Sydney because of this? Hope the airport is paying for everyones expenses.

I'd rather they clear the terminal and re-screen everyone, as inconvient as that may be. You never know, those people that didn't get screened, may be done it for a reason.

On a different note, I saw on the news this morning that it was a brand new X-Ray machine that wasen't operating properly.... It wasen't the new Virgin checkpoint surley? :p (Looks at Virgin Blue )

T2 is a zoo normally, it must be an absolute nightmare at the present. Thank god Virgin has their own premium checkpoint now.

I feel I should say, why couldn’t they track who they were after the screening point so this didn’t have to happen, but then when I think about that scenario, that’s a bit too much Big Brother isn’t it ;)

The question is, how and who will compensate the pessengers all the inconvienience which is airport's issue? Would Macbank pay up? ;)

My perspective.
Mel incident - passenger unilaterlally breaches security = empty terminal, find and charge passenger

Syd incident - passengers accdentally breach security through no fault of their own and may not even know they weren't being screened properly = minimal risk, versus massive cost and disruption.

At the end of the day airport security is a risk v efficiency trade off

Had a similar thing once happen at OOL (admittedly during the terminal
refurbishment/upgrade).

A straggler passenger from a virgin blue domestic flight exited his
aircraft and wasn't greeted at the walkway by VB staff (as during the
refurbishment aircraft didn't quite pull up to the terminal). Unsure
which way to turn the PAX turned left and walked along and entered the
international door unchallenged.

PAX went for the exit and being confronted by passport control realised
he had entered a restricted area :P

The entire international terminal had to be re-screened & passports
re-checked. Which offcourse caused a fair delay for the morning's
International flights.

4 from memory, probably couldn't have happened at a worse time of the day

JQ - KIX, NRT & AKL
D7 - KUL

(we were off to KIX for Japanese Formula 1- was on the last shinkansen to Nagoya for F1 next morning (race day) with the delay)
