Today I fly lhr to JFK and I wonder as a qantas club member (only) can I :
Use business class check-in?
Will this bypass the 3 hour check-in limit for Econ pax at T5?

Basic answer is no on both counts.

While BA recognise QP for lounge entry, it doesn't (officially) extend to J check-in.

Also, even if you were WP, I don't believe it helps with the check-in limitation. BA consider non-BA status to be nearly worthless in many ways.

I thought that WP/ OWE have access to priority business/ first check in. I have certainly used it flying BA Y in the past 12 months. Has this changed ?

Yes they do, but in T5, it's pretty moot due to it's layout and their push towards people checking themselves in.

Also, all through the BA network, OWE/OWS is very rarely mentioned. Most signs and website pages refuse to acknowledge OWE/OWS, but instead only refer to BA Gold/Silver.

Many perks offered in T5 are BA Gold/Silver only, and don't extend to WP. "FastTrack (or GoSlow depending on the time of the day) security" for example (in T5, T3 is different) isn't extended to WP - you must be BA Gold/Silver etc.

The limitation regarding checking in bags at LHR T5 are only relaxed for First and BA Gold (IIRC - Haven't looked recently). So yep, WP doesn't help.

I tried to 'drop off' my bag early and still got told 3 hour checkin rule for non-first, club world and in the end there was so many bag drop counters I wasn't waiting long.

Nothing to do now but in enjoy a nice glass of sauv-blanc and a packet of chips :)

I checked in bags at 11.45am for a 1605 departure ex LHR T5. I was flying economy, and as WP used the F check-in counters. Didn't even know there WAS a three hour limit :)

Also had my checked luggage of 31 kilos waived through without question.

So to me there were pretty significant benefits of QF status when it comes to BA.

I do agree however that other stuff like fast track is limited to BA status only.

You were very lucky. The 32kg benefit is not a OWE/OWS benefit with BA, nor is early check-in of bags. I actually thought the computer wouldn't have allowed either.

Perhaps you found a staff member who had the discretion, and chose to use it. Not a common experience at T5.

I agree the extra baggage allowance is NOT a OWE benefit - and I was prepared to transfer some of the extra weight to my hand luggage if required (BA has no weight limits on cabin baggage other than you must be able to lift it into the overhead locker). But at the FCL check-in they didn't even seem concerned.

As for the check-in limit - I didn't even know it existed until I read this thread!! I was staying at an el-cheapo hotel that kicked me out at 10.00am - so I got to the airport very early and checked in following VAT refund. It may well have been earlier than 11.45.

Hi guys,

in relation to the quote below that Fast Track is available to BA only at LHR (T3), I saw the following:

http://www.qantas.com.au/agents/dyn/qf/policies/lonhrw010211.pdf

which effectively states that Fast Track is a benefit for WPs. Did anyone have luck using (or even trying) it (in LHR T3) or is it just a waste of printed space?

Cheerio,
Michael.

The original post by Mal stated that it is not a benefit in T5, but it is in T3… ;)

I have used it several times without issue, but haven't used it now for about 9 months.

Flying LHR-JFK with BA Y T5 in Feb this year, had no issues being able to use F checkin ( that's after finding the counters), F line was long, so switched to J counters.

I saw the fasttrack security line to the left of J counters, asked the agent if I could use it, assuming I may not be able as agent did not mention this. Was told off course, assume lack of service by agent was more assumption as a FFlyer, I would know the go.
