Folks,

Any suggestions on the best/cheapest local SIM to use in both Singapore and Malaysia. I only want it for incoming/outgoing calls and SMS. I do not want any data access at all.

I did do a search in the Communications threads and couldn't see a solution.

Thanks in advance.

In Malaysia, I have used Hotlink many times and they seem quite cheap so i haven't bothered comparing others Eg RM8.80 gets you the starter pack. see below.
Hotlink - Your Total Mobile World

I have not bought a SIM in Spore for quite some time, but be aware that most Sim card providers in Spore charge for incoming calls IIRC:shock:

I bought a pre-paid 'Starhub' SIM card in T3 12 months ago - local call rates back to OZ - am sure it would work in Malaysia just as well.

Just go to the currency exchange booth in middle of T3 and request info.

M1 have a similar card too - but I'm not sure they are suitable due to high roaming cost to receive calls (in Malaysia). Both are usually about $S1 / minute to receive calls in Malaysia.

You can get the incoming call charges (in Singapore) removed for about 60c/day.

I use Starhub in Singapore also - easy to buy TopUp cards on the street, and I love the fact that after a certain number of SMS - they offer you freebies.

If it can easily be said by SMS - that's the way I keep in touch with my PA; I save the calls for lengthy conversations.

And the more you top-up the longer the sim lasts; mine is currently valid for at least 8 months.

Thank for all the input folks.

FYI - I've decided to go with Travelsim for a number of reasons. It's probably not the cheapest, but it will still offer me significant savings. I can set it up before I leave Australia and if I have any problems I can get support easily. They offer free SMS if my kids log on to their site and send them via the web. I'm not a technophile so I don't want to be sitting in Singapore trying to activate a sim card and I'm not taking a laptop so I'll have no access to the web. For top ups (if needed) I'll get my daughter to loginto my account here at home and recharge for me. This is also only a one off trip so I wont be needing it into the future.

Again, thanks for all the input.

If you haven't purchased a SIM and want a free SIM (no credit but the SIM will be free) drop me a PM and i'll sort you out with one (I work for the opposition to Travel SIM ;))

drewbles,

Thankyou very much for the offer, but a day too late! I purchased the Sim on-line yesterday afternoon at 14:58 and it was delivered this morning in Adelaide by Express Post. If their SIM service is as good as their Customer Service, I'll be happy.

Thankyou very much again for your kind offer.

How do the rates compare to TravelSIM?

(Says he, currently using a singtel sim, not sure what to get for Malaysia - most likely Celcom)

More info please - don't be afraid to give your employer a plug - some info please so we can all assess.

drewbles is very aware of how far he can and can't go with commercial posts on this forum. In the past he has provided a lot of general and specific product information that I'm sure he will link you to. Suffice to say I have used his product and found it very good for my situation.

I'd be interested to have a look at drewbies product also. For an upcoming Europe trip I am looking to tethering my laptop to my mobile. My current Netherlands sim only provides minimal data, so looking at alternatives. Sorry for OTP.:)

As straitman says, i'm aware of commercial posting rules, but am always happy to offer help on the products of the company I work for.

I'm first and foremost a frequent traveller. I just happen to work in an industry that is extremely complimentary to my flying addiction ;)

If anyone wants information on SIM cards I can supply feel free to drop me a private message.

The usual other caveat, I'm not in sales and make zero dollars if you do buy one of our SIM cards; I'm one of the network guys.

I'll drop you guys a PM with some links to our rates. I know our service inside out, but not fully versed in TravelSIM.

I will say that roaming data = expensive regardless of which option you select, unless you can find a local pre-paid SIM card. Carriers dislike non-subscribers using data on their networks, especially with the proliferation of smart phones and their data-hungry nature.

*edit*

oz_mark, your PM inbox is full so I can't send you info...

Drewbles, is there any locations where your company's product won't work? I am planning a 6-ish month trip second half of this year and if I can do so without giving most of my money to Optus in roaming charges I would be very happy! I already have a Singapore phone/sim (prepay) and Aussie iPhone 3G (yes, old but it does still work... and the screen has never broken despite many drops, unlike my colleagues' iPhone 4s!).

I like to travel odd places so good coverage is important - my friend's phone worked with Telstra in Bhutan, of all places! Most exotic this trip will be North Korea, but that won't count since they confiscate your phone anyway, I believe.

If you could give me some insight into your product that would be very helpful. Thanks!

North Korea you are correct on. No service there for any carrier. I know we do cover Cuba, which makes us one of the very few companies that provide a roaming service there.

I'll drop you a PM with some details that may assist. Anyone else, just drop me a PM rather than asking in here and i'll be happy to pass on details :)

Sorry for digging up a dying thread but I'm looking for a SIM to use in various Asian countries (in the past I've just bought a prepaid SIM in each country I visited) - drewbles could you send me a PM with some details of your product? (I can only send PMs to staff members until I hit to 15 posts).
