Carry on Baggage - allowances abused to save!

The real issue is lack of enforcement and this is something that (most) airlines simply do not want to throw resources at.

I was on a SYD-MEL DJ flight a few months ago where one of the flight attendants was weighing everyones cabin baggage (first/only time I've seen it) The queue was almost at a stand still, it was a full flight, at one of the coughpy DJ gates where there is next to no room to line up, so the line was snaking out across the main terminal. After 10mins only about a third of the line had been cleared. You do this EVERY flight you can forget about OTP and perceived customer service numbers.

A LCC such as Tiger does not have the above issues as the check in staff are the real bulldogs who do not you let you through without every item in your possession being weighed and tagged, and hopefully getting a luggage fee out of you. This leaves gate staff to do their real job, get the flight boarded and departed on time.

The wait in the Q to check in combined with the wait at the other end for baggage leaves many choosing carry on only... Combine that with lower checked luggage allowance and steep charges for excess

Unfortunately for me most times I fly I have tools so have to check them in.

The problem now is that there is not enough room in the overhead lockers and we wait to board the plane while people try to find room for their case, laptop, handbag and whatever! Last 3 flights they have made announcements to place your stuff under the seat to free up room.

Not seen any Qantas staff challenge ANYONE in the last few years about their case size/weight

Sorry to say, but I have spent 40 minutes witing at the baggage carousel in Melbourne on more than one occassion. If it were only three minutes, maybe less people would mind.

I would check in a bag maybe once every 20 times I fly, and NEVER domestically.... IME the carousel is the "great leveller". I get sick of watching Business tags coming out and circling round whilst my First tags are still somewhere in the bl00dy plane:(

On Wednesday morning (QF 10 LHR-MEL) I waited for nearly 30 minutes for my CLEARLY marked luggage to appear. I absolutely HATE waiting. I get so annoyed with the complete FARCE of priority luggage tags!

Maybe the handlers think "First" means to be loaded *onto* the plane first not off??

I always thought the same - why bother with this "Perk" when it clearly doesn't really mean anything in the FF (Real) World.

As always, Air NZ have the answer with their fast bag tag.

Not sure how you would adapt that to a 737. Perhaps virgin could offer it with their rear stairs.

My last luggage check in attempt was at SYD and it was 25 minutes between arriving at the carousel and the carousel being turned on. Obviously a sample size of 1 gives really bad statistics. As you have much better experience with SYD I might give it another try.

Agree BNE has been consistently good and that is where I pick up luggage the most a I'm usually with the family.
Here is what happened to me in SYD tonight.

8:48pm - Touch down
8:49pm - Call home for dad to come and pick me up
8:50pm - Aircraft gets to gate
8:52pm - Start disembarking
8:54pm - Business Class Lounge checking Anytime Access entry, bite to eat and drink
9:04pm - Downstairs to carousels to find that bags have been out for a while and my bag is moving just in front of me
9:05pm - Outside waiting for dad to pick me up
9:10pm - Dad arrives and head off for home

Luggage must have been on carousel <10 minutes from the time it arrived at gate.

Admittedly the taxi queue was a mess but looking at train departures there was a train into the city in 2 mins, 7 mins and 17 mins. I don't remember if a 400 bus was coming past while I was waiting but a 400 bus every 20 minutes means I would not have been waiting long.

So for now I shall be checking in luggage and leave myself free to move around the terminal, lounge, as I please....

Three different scenarios :)

Oh, I see. well some answers.
First situation: level flight overhead locker 1 m above target object, assume simple case of total vertical movement and no horizontal movement.

v2=u2+2as=0^2 + 2*10*1=20 => final velocity =sqrt(20) ~ 4.5 m/s at impact

Second situation: A bit more difficult, first the distance that the bag falls before it is falling faster than the dive rate using the above equation.

s=30^2/2*10=400m actually that isn't that important. Really only need to know the speed after falling 1 m, which happens when it is falling faster than the dive. So v^2=30^2+2*10*1=920 => v = 30.3 m/s The bag will hit the target object at an apparent velocity of 0.3 m/s

Third situation: the velocity at impact is 30 m/s.

Knowing the velocity at impact, we can then work out the kinetic energy at the point just before impact.

1) KE=70.9 J
2) KE=63.3 J (assuming that the starting velocity is 30 m/s)
3) KE=3150 J (assuming a starting velocity of 0 m/s, that it is a straight line fall and that the target object is stationary)

The force involved from the impact is then related to the deceleration of the object. This deceleration is then related to the distance travelled or the time taken to stop. It is also related to the work down in the impact which is the KE just before impact. impact force * stopping distance = KE. We can see that impact force is inversely proportional to the stopping distance. So the shorter the stopping distance (or in fact stopping time) the higher the force. zero stopping distance means infinite force. Therefore, mass is relatively unimportant as the shorter the stopping distance the greater the force. But we might also appreciate that a longer stopping distance means, in the case of someone's head, that the skull, head, neck or spine is moving further also creating the potential for serious damage.

Finally, all the of equations I used involve squares of the velocity. A change in velocity has a much great affect compared to a change in mass. Double the velocity and the KE will be 4 times as much, double mass, KE is only doubled. The velocity is the same for different mass objects under constant acceleration (such as gravity).

Sorry no actual force number but then I don't know the stopping distances.

edit: but for case 1 those 70 J in a stopping distance of 1 cm would be 6000-7000 N.

7kg is not that much. I am more used to BA where there is no actual limit on hand baggage up to 23K providing you can lift it yourself (which is maybe a bit generous!). On a recent SQ my carryon was 10kg by the time laptop, iPad, camera, charger, and a couple of books had been included. This was overlimit but they just said take the laptop out before you get on the plane and carry it in your hand! I have never been challenged anywhere else as to hand luggage weight.

Here is what happened to me in BNE last night.

7:38pm - Touch down
7:40pm - Aircraft gets to gate
7:44pm - Start disembarking
7:47pm - Waiting at carousel
7:48pm - First bag out and mine is the 7th bag to come out
7:50pm - At Coachtrans kiosk booking 8:20pm departure
7:54pm - Sitting and waiting for 8:20pm Coachtrans service (I can see airtrain above and it was a good 5 minutes before it departed)

I know this is only one persons experience but this is what I find happens consistently.

I cannot see any reason to even attempt to go carry-on only with these sorts of waiting times....

IF only this happened at Melbourne or Sydney... but alas not. Event the "Priority" tags dont help

It does happen to me in Sydney consistently. See my post a few posts above for experience on Friday night.

You are very lucky then. I cannot recall the last time I got "fast" checked luggage

Brisbane last week - was in the Budget car hire line for 20 mins before my luggage appeared. The week before in Sydney, In the Avis line for over 20 mins before luggage was out.

Melbourne Airport is by far the worst though IMO. If I could do carry on only surely I would

Next time I arrive at MEL, I am going to record all the times like JohnK. But likely there will be more time at the carousel.

Domestically all QF jet passengers are entitled to 2 x 7kg carryon bags.

So waiting for luggage generally does not affect me, especially as I rarely use it (unless planning on playing golf).
