Hi guys,

I currently have an ANZ Platinum card but I want to switch to a card with FF rewards and have to choose between the ANZ Frequent Flyer or the ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum (want to stay with ANZ). I've been told both come with 20,000 bonus Qantas points.

I just want know if people think the extra $150 per year is worth it for the Platinum card. It looks like the best extra benefits are;

-travel insurance
-Access to Visa Platinum Concierge (this seems like a waste of time- I've never used it on my current Platinum card)
-entre for ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum American Express. (this seems intersting but I couldn't find any more details - what is entre and what do you get?)

Any help in deciding would be great.

Cheers =)

For me the most important consideration would be the points earning rate. The platinum card is likely to have a higher cap or no cap. You should look at that compared to your average monthly spend. It is highly likely that the extra $150 will get you many more FF points.

Also I think the may be a $55 fee for the rewards program. I was a long term ANZ FF visa holder but I have forgotten most of the details.

I've never used any concierge service, travel insurance or any other perceived benefit of any card I've got or had... if you think you'll use it then factor that into your decision.

To justify the $295/year fee you want to be spending at minimum - $30K annually on that card when looking at it from a purely points based standpoint.

Also, if you switch from one ANZ product to another you won't get any signup bonuses (eg: 20,000 points). It needs to be a brand new credit application.

If you've got a history with ANZ, give them a call and tell them what you want to do (upgrade from Plat to FF Plat), but you don't want to pay the difference. If you are a valued customer and the CSA isn't a total deadbeat - you will be offered something, a discount, points... something to sweeten the deal and keep you onboard.

Thanks for the advice guys

How do you the calculate the fee vs. points value to get $30K? Is that based on 45,000 points using the American Express or 15,000 using the VISA?

Cheers

Have you tried comparisons sites? Some of them have ways of standardising points redemption so you can see how many points you need to spend before your get something back

I'm not sure of exactly how it is calculated. But I think many here use a nominal value of 1 cent per point. $30k spend will get 30k points with a nominal value of $300. Hence at that point you have got your annual fee covered.
