Does anyone have flight suggestions for a Sydney - Moscow trip in March, April or May :?:

There are no specific Alliance or Airline requirements other than the airline being a reputable carrier. Travel would be in cattle class and possibly with a stopover enroute.

Time in Moscow would be about three weeks with no other touring requirements one in Russia.

Looking forward to answers from the experts. :D

I'd go for SQ, because they are SQ, and they fly into DME.

KE also flies into Moscow, but use SVO.

Some other choices:

China Southern via CAN into SVO;
Air China via PEK into SVO;
QF to BKK and on to SVO with SU;
EY via AUH into DME;
EK via DXB into DME;
AY/QF codeshares via BKK and HEL and into SVO.

SVO is an interesting experience for those still hankering for the good-old-days of the USSR. Apparently it has improved somewhat, but the identities of the major carriers who have abandoned it in the last 5 years, and taken their operations over to DME, is telling - LH, BA and, I believe, AA, just to name three.

Avoid SVO, it's horrible. Even after today's big dose of Xmas booze I am experiencing PTSD symptoms as I recall my experiences there. DME is no Changi, but it's less... Soviet.

Hong Kong Airlines flies HKG-SVO for under 6k HKD return

We went via BKK and HEL on AY-they were very good and HEL was a very enjoyablew stopover.Reported on the SVO ecperience in my TR of the Arctic.

SQ fly to IAH via DME so that might be worth looking into.

I'd go for SQ, because they are SQ, and they fly into DME.
...and you can TF your AMEX pts to KF points for an award flight....need around 80K for a return economy saver:idea:

Sin would be a nice stopover point for a nice meal after all that Russian fare;)

What interesting tour are you planning Bill?:p

Not for me unfortunately.

I'm staying with a friend in Sydney and he is off to Moscow. I'm introducing him to the delights of AFF.

If flying from MEL, then you would have the privilege of using Qatar Airways.
From MEL, the connections on Thai are excellent.

With your limited options from SYD, best use SQ.

I have taken the SQ through to DME a few times - and its a great flight. Although I am finding SQ is dropping its game more and more - the SIN-DME sector always has great service.

Have a good flight.

Nice little story on Crikey today about Moscow.
Plane Talking
By our Moscow correspondent
It’s one thing for airports to close because of really heavy snow (as in New York and nearby tonight), and one thing for airports to close in light snow because of greedy, foolish airport owners (as in the case of London Heathrow recently, to paraphrase the more forgiving accounts in the UK press) but for Moscow’s airports to be paralysed because it was too warm in winter IS something out of left field.
Moscow had a Christmas ‘heatwave’. It rained, rather than snowed, because it was 20C warmer than normal, in fact, temperatures went close to zero degrees C, and as a valued Russian aviation associate recounts, this was very bad for air travelers in a country famous for coping with ultra cold (and thus ultra dry) winters without missing a beat.
