Airline introduces "cuddle class" and horizontal economy seating

Air New Zealand will launch a new economy seating deemed "cuddle class", the New Zealand Herald reports.
Allowing couples to purchase two full seats and a third for half price, the new seating arrangement will allow for two people to lie down and sleep on long-haul flights.
The first Boeing 777-300ER aircraft will land in Auckland on Christmas Eve, including the new economy seating officially called Skycouch, media reports say.
Air New Zealand chief executive Rob Fyfe said the Skycouch would re-define economy class air travel, "Four long years of planning and design are about to become a reality and there is a great deal of excitement within the airline about the game-changing aircraft we are about to introduce," he told the New Zealand Herald.
"Few if any airlines have invested time and money in re-designing the economy experience and we've done it for both economy and premium economy."
The airline is careful to avoid referring to the Skycouch as a bed, and they stress it will not replace the lie-flat bed experience for which business class travellers pay a premium.
Air New Zealand group general manager Ed Sims said that economy class passengers are ignored by most other airlines as they focus on the lucrative business and first-class markets.
The Boeing 777's first commercial flight will be from Auckland to Melbourne on January 10. A second 777 will be delivered in February next year, with the new aircraft flying the New Zealand-US route from April 2011.

A silly question maybe.
What do they do to stop the second person falling on the floor through the gap where peoples legs normally go when seated?

Appears in the photo that the row the sleepers are in is reclined but seats in front are upright. Perhaps they have to get the row in front to recline so they don't fall through the gap!:)

Footrest under the seat rotates to be horizontal and form part of the bed.

I saw this on NZs website a while back and wondered what happens when the seat belt sign comes on. Presumably no more lying flat.

Also thought that NZ, like others, would have to abandon demands that pax keep their seat belt fastened at all times when sitting. Haven't flown for a long time with any airline that didn't demand this because of the risk of clear air turbulence.

Cheers skip

I'm 100% certain that you'll still be wearing a seatbelt of some sort while using it. With the issues of CAT and recent Airbus Induced CAT there is just no way they would have people seated without belts.

Agree - I cannot imagine them going to the expense of designing this without incorporating seatbelt into the design somehow.

I saw on the news, a flight attendant attaching a rather large extension seatbelt that went across a couple lying down.

There may be many airlines wishing they had thought of this first.
Great marketing from NZ!

My understanding is that Air New Zealand now holds worldwide patents for the new seating. They expect to generate a lot of income from such patents.

What happens if people want to do more than 'cuddle'?

Guess it'll free up the wc's for their intended purpose.

NZ have made it clear that while "spooning" is going to be encouraged.........

...."forking" will be verymuch frowned upon....:mrgreen:

What if.....

Two people haven't paid the extra premium yet there is a spare seat anyway. Do you think this will create any problems in this revenue mad age in which we live?

Nah. You can pay extra and guarantee the product, or you can just hope (dream maybe) that you'll get it anyway. You pay for the certainty of getting the product, I liken it to buying an upgrade with points vs hoping for an op up.
