Yep,if I remember correctly one flight is UA 839 and the other is UA 863.Same reason there has been two for the last twenty years or so , one from Lax and one from SFO.
At the moment there is a second daily LAX-SYD-LAX service, to cope with the increased silly-season traffic.
Air fares are quite cheap ex USA to Oz at the moment; ~USD850 fares are common....

For the same reason that many Aussies fly Qantas.I think you would be surprised to learn (a) just how Americans live in, or visit, Australia and (b) how many of those Americans will always fly an American airline without exception if an American carrier flies to where they want to go.
