Oprah, QANTAS and Australia!

Sorry to be the negative one again but do people actually think this is going to provide a boost to tourism in this country?

So all these years spending millions and millions on overseas advertising trying to promote Australia has not done very much for our tourism when all we had to do was bring out Oprah for one show and all the Yanks will start flocking to Australia for their holidays.

Well Oprah has huge influence in US. Just about anything that appeared in Oprah becomes best sellers. I lived in Chicago a few years ago and people are obsessed with Oprah.

I'll be applying for tickets to be in the audience!
Apparently they will be offered Olympic Games-style ballot.
I wouldn't want to miss it

I lived in Chicago a few years ago and seriously I could not get a ticket at all for any of the Oprah shows. It was that hot of property over there. However, it was easy to get Jerry Springer show tickets though

Indeed.

You should have seen the mob when she decided to attend Wicked in NY with yours truly sitting a few seats away in the same row.

Of course I didn't even notice, I was more preoccupied with the suited gentleman with an earpiece that was sitting next to me.

I tried to get back to my seat during the intermission and couldn't because of the swarm of people being pushed away from the vicinity of my seat by security.

The gentleman with the earpiece spots me and helps me through. Still totally oblivious to what was going on I asked him - he pointed to the seats to his right and there was Oprah and her entourage. The earpiece gentleman ended up being one of her bodyguards :)

I don't envy her. No amount of money would be worth living like that.

That could explain why she has to go to the other side of the world, to get away from that mob (apart from the 300!).

Yes John it will.

And yes they should have done it ages ago. $3m is nothing in the scheme of TA's budget and will be worth every cent. We will be flooded by the mindless Americans who hang on her every word ;)

Have a read up online on the power of Oprah... It's actually a bit scary - she can make or break a President.

That ABC news page also says approximately how may audience reservations will be up for grabs for Australians, 3000. It also does not say what the who pays how much costing breakdown is for paying for Oprah and co to come here.

Jenifur Charne

ABC tv news said $1.5 mil from federal and I think $2 mil from NSW.

Considering they claim 70 million viewers worldwide it will be a great advertisement for Australia.

I'm tipping they'll be heading over on a B747 as I believe Travolta is rated on the type

Actually, I believe he's rated on the A380. IIRC, QF picked up the tab for him to get his rating on the A380 in their Sims. So, I presume it'd be A380 and he'll be a co-pilot.

Well I had better get out of IT and get into the tourism industry then.

I am not concerned about the $3M Tourism Australia is spending on this campaign. I just do not believe in all the hype and in 12 months time Australia's tourism will still be in the same mess it is today.

So, jb747 as pilot, John Travolta as co-pilot :p

It reminds me of the Vic Govt paying $3 million to bring Tiger Woods to town
Why does she need a few million of tax payers $ to grace us with her appearance
She's only worth $2.3 billion

And look at what that has done for Victorian tourism.

Although to be fair the tournament was a huge success and also the beginning of the end for one Eldrick Woods....

It did bring in a cash injection to Victorian tourism at the time...;-)
