Just a quick question R.E. SmartGate

I had problems using Smart Gate on my recent SYD-WLG-SYD trip. I know it can't be used for Children's passports. I can't actually recall the message itself, but it had something to do with an error of reading or something

Does anyone know if this applys to the actual programming of the chip preventing the use of Smart Gate. My current passport is an M Series so does have a chip, and is a 'Child's passport, even though I am older than 18 (it was issued when I was under 18).

Would the fact it is a chil'd passport be the reason it wouldn't read?

I know it's probably a stupid question. But did you insert the passport in the correct direction with the picture facing down? I stuffed that up the first time I used smart gate  and got a message about a reading error.

Thanks for the reply medhead

The passport was definately inserted the correct way, and I did try on multiple terminals at both SYD and WLG to no avail

Could be that you have either lost or put on weight; more or less facial hair; any facial changes it will generally ask you to see officer at next counter. I had similiar lost a fair amount of weight had to see officer at near by counter. Hope this helps.

No, the first step these days is to put you PP into the reader.

If OK it then spits out a Cardbord strip which you later on. need to insert into the "smart gate" for facial recognition

It's at this first step that status_seeker is having problems.

status_seeker, this has happened to me several times in PER. I too have a chipped passport which was issued when I was < 18 (but now am 18) and the machine couldn't read my passport. I also asked the supervisor to help me out, but to no avail.
