Im in Vegas October 22-24 for a conference and my travel agent just got us rooms again at Vdara which is pretty new and connected to the Bellagio, doesn't have a gaming floor and is nice and quiet. Give it a look if your still undecided.

If you head to FT - Hotel Deals - Las Vegas Hotels , you'll find a whole bunch of DEALS for hotels in Las Vegas.

However for quietness, room space and location - I would be thinking of staying at Vdara or Aria as they both are brand new, apartment type rooms, shopping centres downstairs and NO casinos <--- that's the key to quiet quiet quiet! And you also avoid having to walk through the gaming floor to get to your hotel elevator like in all the other casinos that I have stayed at in the past (Bellagio + MGM Grand in July '10, and Planet Hollywood + Paris Las Vegas in Dec '07).

And personally I would skip a hotel with exec. club benefits because there's soooooo many good eating places + tonnes of well priced buffets around + cheap drinks everywhere

I've taken drewbles advice and have booked into the MGM Grand, West Wing. I signed up on their guestbook and got their (standard) discounted rate - still relatively expensive for the period we're travelling though (CES). However reading further seems to indicate that the rooms are quite a bit smaller than those of the Grand Tower.

Would love to hear other's thoughts.

Only have stayed in the GT rooms and they were roomy enough for two people. Bathroom was over sized as well which is a bonus. However the only real benefit would be the WW tower is only 2 minutes away from the Strip, whereas the GT is a 10 minute walk through the casino. Ps. The pools at the MGM is verrrrry good.

Stayed in the West Wing last year. Great rooms. Small, but modern and funky. End of the day you're not spending that much time in your room, and these were great. You still have to walk through the casino to get to it, whereas the towers are a separate part of the hotel (further up the driveway from the MGM grand's main entry).

I'm contemplating something further down-strip for my November stay, not sure where (the 'nice' properties are still wanting $170USD+ per night for mid week unfortunately).

They have a 'friends and family' sale on at the moment. (1 more day to go on the sale)

I looked up 6 nights mid Oct Sun-Fri and it came to $ 377 USD in a widescreen (upgraded) room.

Stayed there last year and it was fantastic.

That is a great deal for under $70 AUD a night!!!

I usually stay at the MGM grand, but the excalibur is a pretty average hotel.

Personally (and for people who haven't been to Vegas before), i'd recommend somewhere further up the strip, not south of Bellagio. I think i'll stay at the Wynn this time (and if anyone is in vegas and wants a free show, there's the "Lake of Dreams" at the Wynn. Best place to view it quietly is from the small bar adjacent to the reception area, upstairs. Cheap coughtails (when you tip generously at least) and a nice way to waste a few hours!

October travel - it's not really "Summer" - try July, when it gets up into the high 30s and low 40s. Good rates at that time of year though! October should be quite a nice time to go (IMHO):

Actually, rates in Vegas are probably at their best. They hit the floor with the GFC and haven't really picked up, especially with new facilities having been opened.

Anyway, together with the suggestions above, try the following for quotes:

As mentioned above, most casinos require a trawl through the gaming floors to get to your room, which isn't that bad if you avoid the smoking sections. I would recommend a casino near Ballagio/Caesar's Palace/Ballys/Flamingo which are nearer the center of the north south strip. MGM is right at the Southern end, so it's either a taxi, bus or mono up to the centre or further North. Alternatively, a rental car is pretty good value, especially if you want to travel around further than just the Strip, but of course, that curtails drinking unless you have a designated driver.

I have stayed at a serviced apartment off the Strip and found that pretty good value. Non-smoking, and no walk through any gaming floor. Lovely pool and low usage by patrons. The space was huge - bigger than my Sydney apartment at that time! I used the following site to book:

Depending on the time of year, these sorts of places can get filled with people going to Vegas to party, so there is a downside (but that applies to any place in Vegas, I guess).

You're correct on Vdara, it doesn't have a casino, but Aria definitely does, was there last week for a convention.

Both great hotels, the standout though in the new City Center complex is hands-down the Mandarin Oriental...fantastic property, I did an inspection of all room types up to the Presidential Suite (which at $14k a night is quite the offering), obviously not the cheapest property on the strip but such a refreshing feel compared to the other casino hotels.

The Crystals shopping arcade isnt yet fully opened but I highly recommend a meal at the Italian pizza place (wolfgang puck I believe it was), really nice food.

The walkway on the strip between City Center and Bellagio is blocked off at the moment so its a bit of a pain for getting around, but apart from that, great spot and very happening.

I stayed at Bellagio myself (as I did last year also) and its a fantastic property, the walk through the casino is probably one of the more tolerable that i've experienced and really my only negative is that the rooms are so dark you almost need a flashlight to see in your suitcase, but apart from that the rooms are really quiet and perfect after a long day of convention.

I was in Vegas in 2006 and highlight of that visit was Chicago at the MGM Grand, sitting at front row, and a riveting 25 or 6 to 4 finale.

You could do a search through ticketmaster, and specify the date range and type of event e.g. music:

Las Vegas tickets, show dates, travel, map. Official Ticketmaster site
