domestic qf multicity rules

er, i know they say there's no such thing as a dumb qn ... but when doing a multicity QF booking online, it says under the rules that the (two) "breaks" are for land/sea travel between QF flights on the intinerary ... would there be anything to stop me/voiding the booking by booking a different QF flight during that break? (ie, as a completely separate booking?)

my plans are

SYD > BNE *break1* BNE > CNS *break2* CNS > BNE > SYD as the multicity booking, but with an additional (separate) BNE > LRE > BNE overnight flight during break1

No there wouldn't be as it isn't attached to the original booking. you'd be fine to book the additional flight - just make sure you aren't cutting it fine to mack your connecting flight in BNE (or are you planning on staying an extra few days?

You can 'adjust' their rules slightly also. Where they limit you to two segments per day can be modified by initially putting in two legs on any given day and flexible dates and then changing it back to the one date only. (Does that make sense?)

Also with say two flights in separate bookings on the same day you can still have bags checked through to final destination by 'linking them'. Eg if travelling LRE/BNE in one pnr and BNE/MEL in another as long as you tell the checkin agent when you checkin you are going LRE/BNE/MEL they can merge your flights in the checkin system so you receive both boarding passes and your bag is tagged through to your final destination.

This is quite right...I had booked SYD-BNE-TSV and, separately, TSV-CNS last year. At check-in in SYD, the agent linked the two PNRs and issued all boarding passes and, yes, the bag was in CNS. Once, on a similar trip, the QF Club agent in TSV put me on an earlier connecting flight to CNS. She called baggage area which identified my bag, issued a new luggage tag (and brought it to the QF Club) and still had bag on my (earlier) flight to CNS. Good service from QF TSV staff.

I guess it depends on the airline involved. I had a multicity booking on Virgin America (VX) JFK/LAS/SFO but rerouted it to LAS/JFK - SAN/SFO and was only charged one change fee of USD50.00 per person which worked out USD25.00 per sector.

If I'd booked both VX sectors separately I would've had to pay USD100.00 per person to change both.

A lot of other US carriers charge around USD150.00 per change and as we didn't pay much more than that for any of our flights you could pretty much say that it's a case of 'use it or lose it' if you are changing bookings at whim.

When I mentioned that you could not change multicity online and that it is an expensive exercise, I was referring to the subject, that is, QF Domestic, its $85 to change.
