Hi,

Just a quick question about JQ 1D/1E/1F seats.

If my memory serves me correctly, there is a forward galley protected by a divider in front of 1D/1E/1F on the A320.

My question is to confirm that is correct, and lastly if 1D in particular has more or less legroom than any other seat (excluding the extra legroom ones).

Thanks!

The principal benefit of these seats on JQ is that no one can recline into your space and they are at the very front of the plane. There is a bulkhead in front, however. IMHO there is slightly less legroom than a normal JQ seat. In a "normal" seat you can at least put your feet under the row in front.

There is always the issue of overhead locker storage. Not all FA's reserve space for Row 1. Nor do they allow Row 1 to collect their luggage first. Some do, most do not.

1C is good - no bulkhead - but if you board early to get some overhead locker acreage, you are really in the way of all the other pax boarding and frequently get hit with the egregious amounts of carry on "others" seem to get away with.

I have raised these issues with JQ often. I have been politely thanked for my interest and feedback!

thanks for the help BrisVegas Traveller, I will reassign my seat on OLCI now.

It's the midnight horror from PER, and I'm about 6'5" so these questions need answering :p (not that I can sleep, just for comfort!)

EDIT: Oh, you can't reassign on JQ?

Oh well.

Try calling them, but be prepared for along wait. Sometimes it helps and sometimes not. If you are on a Jetflex fare you should be OK. JQ is a lottery especially with the call centre.

Good luck - what a trip to face. I hope there are fun times at the end of it.

Not Jetflex...price beat guarantee fare:p

Therefore, I expect little in the way of help! Maybe if I book an exit row on the flight back to PER on Sunday night they might be kind to me and change my seat for Saturday morning. We'll see.

I'll report back later with result.

EDIT: Oh, you can't reassign on JQ?
TRUE: Once you have completed web checkin with JQ, that's it, you can't log in again later and change seats.

IMO, given your height, you have selected to sit in (what you will find to be) the MOST uncomfortable seat on a JQ A320. The call centre is unlikely to be able to help you, if they can't the best course of action is probably to go to the JQ service desk (landside) at the airport (as close to T-2 hours) and ask for a different seat assignment! (1C, an exit row, or any aisle seat on the front left side of the aircraft (row 2, 3, 4, 5...) - in that order of preference:!: *)

* 1ABC & exit rows cost the most extra, followed by 1DEF, 2 & 3

Fun fun!

At PER would I just go up to the regular QF service desk? Or have they got a JQ one there (I can't seem to recall seeing one).

I seem to remember a post a while back from someone who didn't like 1DEF as the light from the galley was annoying plus the associated galley noise.

Qantas staff will not be able to assist you.

Try looking first near the JQ check-in desks, you should be able to see a "service" sign somewhere, rather than "check in" or "bag drop", the person behind that counter has the ability to help you the most. (You will probably still have to pay any extra required for a more choice seat, if they can make the change for you.)

Don't forget that if you haven't already checked in for your return flight, you may still be able to change your seat allocation online (depending how close to flight time it is when you do so). The website will work out how much extra you have to pay, if you select a more expensive seat zone than you have already purchased.

Please let us know how you go. :)

many thanks for the help dk4! I have already checked in for my return flight though. Later night than I predicted tonight, will get on to JQ when i get home.

ozbeachbabe - I recall that post too. But unless it's an early morning flight following a red-eye, I'm no hope of sleeping!

I was about to post a very similar question after searching, could only find some ideas on a 6 month old FT thread. Basically I got myself into a 4hr SYD-AKL ride on JQ for $70. Now I've only flown JQ a few times NZ domestic and each time was given exit rows for free. This time I'm quite happy to fork out for any seat and my impression is 1C is the best for the single traveller except for some foot traffic. 1A has the slide raft(?) on the door to contend with and 1DEF are nice but not for practicing ballet pointe from your seat. I do find Y bulkheads on QF 333 and 763's wo/ cut-outs annoying.

It's mostly a space & partly privacy issue. I'm not tall tall, I found TT cozy but not painful. So does everyone recommend 1C if you had to pick the best seat? It sounds like 1B on a Q400. The downsides being dealing with carry-on back in row 3 and the occasionally pax stumbling to the loo?

Will to stay positive and think towards a LAN bed on return... if their plane turns up :)

For most of my Jet* flights this year, I've been able to select seats 1DEF during OLCI, except once was a bit late and ended up in 3C. I remember being annoyed with my knees hitting the seat in front of me in 3C. When I was in row 1 however, I greatly appreciated nothing touching my knees, even with the reduced foot space, I just leaned it against the divider while crossing my legs...

Of all the free seats, IMHO 1D is the best as you can still extend your leg into the aisle, while 1F has a curved wall I believe.. trying very hard to remember all that at this time, but I definitely preferred 1D of all the seats I could select during OLCI.

Oh.. all my flights were about 60-90 minutes so if you're flying from Perth.. well I have little experience with relatively longer flights =)

I agree with BvT about overhead locker space. It can be an issue if you have a solid, barely legal :p carry-on and you board mid-late. My carry-on bag is quite small (11x37x29cm) so I could fit it in most of the time, but I remember an instance where they stowed it for me in the do not stow area above row 1 and another instance where it was stowed above row 5. I had resigned myself to waiting 10 minutes when the CSM stopped pax getting off and asked one of them to get my bag . Very kind of her as it took me 5 minutes from plane to Skybus (Melbourne) and off to the city, saving me 10 minutes :D

YMMV.

By the way.. FT has posts about people leaving carry-ons up front so they can just pick it up on the way out.. Does this actually happen in Australia?! I've never noticed it and I would feel so weird in case someone actually went through my stuff while I'm far off in a different row.. If it did happen here though, it'd sound like a TT or JQ thing indeed..

I wouldn't feel comfortable about doing that as I'd want my carry on as close as possible to me, in fact most of the time it's small enough to put under the seat in front of me.

In the US they sometimes allow you to wheel your carry on down the aerobridge to the aircraft door then it's put underneath the plane for the flight. On arrival at your destination they retrieve it then put it on a mini conveyor belt up to the aerobridge where you retrieve it as you disembark the aircraft. No going downstairs to the carousel!

This happened to me on a Delta Connection filght SEA/SLC enroute to LAS where the first sector was operated by E170 or E190.

QLink do it on the Crash8s, its called premium baggage.

Sitting in Perth airport waiting for my flight, thought I would update this thread. Got a great result in the end.

Gave up trying to get through on the phone to JQ so just decided to chance it at the airport. Asked for seat re-assignment and had to explain to the attendant that 1D was not extra legroom (took some explaining!). Anyway, once she was convinced, 13C was offered, and duly taken, no extra charge!

Very happy...Jetstar hasn't let me down yet! (Shouldn't be saying that before I fly...should I?)

Generally at the airport JQ will fill emergency exit rows 12 &13 at no cost if their isn't enough able bodied pax already sitting in them, as there is a requirement of at least 2 pax per row.

Glad your experience has been good so far
