AMEX not accepted or surcharge

The only bank that doesn't issue PINs for them... I'd be rather annoyed haha!

I would be more annoyed if it was not for the fact I am getting two points per $ at present and it goes to 3 for hertz/QF spend, which adds up quickly.

Does anyone else recall a communication from Amex regarding Sydney Duty Free and surcharges that was sent out (postcard perhaps?) in the last few months?

No I do not recall any communication but very disappointed that First Tax and Duty Free now has a 1% surcharge for using Amex.

It is coming up nearly a year (IIRC) that 1st DF have been charging that 1% (for all CC transactions). I believe that this can be avoided by paying online (if it has not changed since I last used the website)

Actually, they brought it in and then stopped it shortly after.

Now they have a virtual monopoly on OZ Airports, they have brought it back in again.

I avoid using them ...

I used to order online until the recent (moronic) legislation stating that tobacco products cannot be ordered online.

I will avoid First Tax and Duty Free except to purchase tobacco for my father if I cannot find the tobacco overseas somewhere and unless there are complications in the itinerary I will be purchasing duty free alcohol overseas. I know 1% is peanuts on small purchases but it is more a matter of principle and First Tax and Duty Free is overly expensive on most alcoholic products.

How on earth do companies justify such high surcharges?

People continue to pay the surcharges.

There's a mob in QLD called Gourmet Deliveries that I was reading about today (they basically deliver restaurant meals). They have a 5% surcharge on all credit cards.

I've sent another email to PayPal today, asking them when they're going to get their act together...

I was also recently asked to complete an online survey for them, which asked various questions relating to my satisfaction with PayPal, what I would improve, how I usually pay for various things, and if PayPal was offered for them, why I chose to use another method.

... Almost every answer was "because you won't take my AMEX card", and "I didn't use PayPal because the business accepted AMEX directly"... Hopefully they'll get the message!

Just on this, I bought 2 pairs of new glasses from Specsavers recently - ended up costing me $600 after the (meagre) private health fund rebate. Got out my Amex card and was politely told that they didn't accept Amex. I was very surprised, so had to end up paying with MasterCard.

I called Amex Platinum the next day and told them of my experience. The guy was really helpful and quite surprised that Specsavers didn't accept Amex. He took down the details of the store and its location and promised that someone from the sales team would be contacting Specsavers. He also asked how much I spent at the store and then gave me 600 points.

Have any other members had points credited as a result of ringing Amex to advise of retailers not accepting Amex?
