I found a QF ID card on my seat last week and assumed it had been dropped by a cleaner or cabin crew.

When boarding was finished I got the attention of an FA and handed it to her. She thanked me and took it away. A little later she returned and thanked me again, a bit more profusely.

After take-off the senior FA came back and spent a few minutes thanking me even more effusively. She explained that it was in fact the captain’s ID, that he had been searching frantically for it and that the plane wouldn’t have been going anywhere until he found it. Mind you, they weren’t so grateful that they offered to move me up front.

Don’t know how the card came to be there; I like to think that the captain was plumping up the cushions for me.

maybe he was deadheading on the previous leg.

That was my thought, I can not see any other way it would get there.

Well one of our members here who flies an A380 has said he likes to meet the pax, so if this captain was doing that his ID might have dropped off while doing so. But markis10’s theory sounds more plausible anyway. :p

Although he wouldn't be deadheading down the back?

Deadheading is confirmed Y with J when space available, I have had plenty of flights with tech crew sitting beside me in Y and it has made the time pass quicker, especially when they found out my background.

Routinely Tech Crew might walk down the back to say hello to the crew if there is time... I have even seen one stow the pillows and blankets on the first flight of the day :)
