BA J vs AA J TATL

What's the situation where a ticket is booked through another carrier? Are AA able to take the ticket back and re-issue it?

Can remember some discussion about this previously, but not sure of the current situation.

It depends. If it is a fare which has conditions such as "must be issued on stock of QF" then can be an issue; as long as AA can reissue then is not a problem

I have had some issues with some QF tickets when using eVIPs for upgrades. I have been told different stories as to why they cannot re-issue the ticket, but have always been successful in getting it done in the end. Its taken up to an hour on the phone on one occasion when each times they tries to re-issue they found a different problem and eventually found workarounds for them all.

One excuse was that as the ticket was issues in A$ and the re-issue was being done in US$ their system was rejecting it. It took me some time to explain that A$0.00 = US$0.00 at the prevailing exchange rate of the day! When I was finally able to point out the stupidity of the excuse, they managed to find a way to work around the "problem" and the ticket was re-issued.

I presume these were corporate booked tickets through a TA (or were they personal travel / bought through Qantas direct?). AA were able to grab the ticket from the TA and rebook it? How would that affect any changes that need to be made by Qantas or the TA to the ticket?

I'm curious how it all works in the bigger picture.

Then time to stop thinking about it and get the miles purchased and should be able to grab the upgrade on monday :);

Aaah life would be simple if that was the case! From another thread, tuapekastar is still battling the AA NZ/AU call centre to get a DONEx ticketed. So until that's ticketed I don't think the upgrade can be applied for (as it requires an issued ticket doesn't it?)

Thanks for your advice in this thread. The info about the upgrades is interesting, and I think pretty good value for 25K points. Plus as it's a J->F upgrade there's no APD co-pay, which can be a hassle upgrading AA ex-LHR.

Some have been tickets issues by a travel agent (corporate or otherwise should not make a difference) and others purchased direct form Qantas or AA. When re-issued the ticket has a 001 prefix.

I think on one occasion, the AA EXP agent set it all up for the upgrade, rebooked the passenger in the upgraded cabin, but could not re-issue the ticket. The upgrade was confirmed but not re-issued. The process was finalised when the passenger presented for check-in. The AA EXP agent left the instructions in the PNR for the check-in agent to process the upgrade at check-in.

Indeed he is (and also thanks DN for the advice on 25K miles - sometimes when you are booking something big, it is easy to overlook some little things - that's why I like AFF and FT), and has initiated the purchase process for the required miles to enable the upgrade. Still showing A2 as of an hour or two ago. Unforeseen circumstances notwithstanding, things will be sorted one way or the other on Monday for the DONE4, and provided A class tickets are still available, the upgrade will happen when the miles become available.

@Mal, will you still be in the UK in July? Would like to catch up for a drink if our respective paths cross.

Nah, will be back in Australia mid-late June. Exact date yet to be worked out. While I will miss London, and would love to stay, common sense dictates I need to return to Oz. Will probably head back to London in 6-24 months - will be monitoring the UK economy and job market closely.

No. The upgrades can be applied to tickets which are still on hold with AA. The only time where there can be an issue is the period of time between the ticket being purchased and the ticket issued. If the miles will be there on monday then I would get the upgrade applied before issuing the ticket

Thanks for the tip, as soon as the miles are in the account I'll be onto it!

I have had a number of upgrades processed with AA where ticket number was 081 and QF issued ticket.

On one occasion they:

(1) Took over the booking and reissued the ticket with 001 ticket number. (Non oneworld product)

(2) On the next occasion for an identical QF booking they simply processed the upgrade with notes and did not reissue. This did not cause any issues except at QF end passengers checking in were asked whether they had a paper ticket for AA travel. They said no and it didn't matter - Qf issued the boarding pass in upgraded cabin. Out of ORD on this ticket onto AA flight, checkin didn't even blink - the boarding pass was issued in upgraded cabin no probs.

(3) For a LONE4 they didn't blink and simply reissued. In fact it made making further changes to ticket free as AA just did them whereas QF would have charged for changes.

Occasionally AA agents will say that because you have a QF issued ticket it their segments cannot be upgraded. This tends not to happen with AA Brisbane as they are used to seeing QF issued 081 ticket numbers and know how to cope with them.

My experiences of difficulties are if using a fare type that is a QF fare which can has restrictions on who can issue it; One World and some public fares are no hassles since they have no issuing restrictions. If AA are not able to issue the ticket then the problems can occur and sometimes can be worked around.

If the 2 QF tickets were not carrier issued restricted then there would have been no issues regardless of USA, UK or Australia
