Hi all,

I would like to throw this to the Brains trust in here as you guys seem to always come up with something I miss.

Potentially travelling to YVR for work later this year. My Co is a bit tight and I know I'll be in Y bar a points based upgrade request. I would really like to avoid going through LAX and am Gold on Qantas so Oneworld would be my best bet for any freebies.

The best I can see so far is PER-HKG and HKG-YVR with CX. I like it as it avoids a trip east first. Still that 16.5 hr second leg seems a monster (have had a few 14hr flights in my time).

Any ideas?

I have flown that route with CX in Y and didn’t find it too bad, you get a nice view as you come in to land too. Unless you have points with AsiaMiles though, you’re not upgrading that leg.

If QFF then you'll not get an UG with CX and definately be in Y!

What about a transit via SFO - by all reports much easier to transit.

CX via HKG is as Sam says, the other logical choice. Beware their new Y seating with the hard shells - they are very uncomfortable (again a search will show multiple threads on the Y seats).

Presuming work wont pay for a LONEx (which are upgrade eligible) as that would be another option - go the other way around.....

I have no experience with CX Y, but apparently it's worth avoiding if you're above 6' -- I'm sure others will chime in. I personally like the sound of this, as it neatly avoids LAX and US CBP in general. :)

I was thinking that PER-NRT-LAX-YVR would be an option to break it up a bit, but there are no reasonable fares available for that routing.

The only other thing is PER-BNE/SYD/MEL-LAX-YVR on QF.

In reference to CX Y seating. I flew to Hong Kong with CX last week in Y and back with QF in Y, and I hated the CX seats. The cushions slide forward rather than the actual seat reclining back. Sleep on the QF leg was so much better!

Where'd the 16.5 hr leg come from? HKG-YVR is ~ 12hrs and YVR-HKG is ~13 - 13.5 hrs depending on aircraft type.

It depends on a range of factors, it seems that options via HKG & NRT (one oneworld), or for example AKL (on NZ) involvie long layovers. If minimising travel time is important QF to SYD and then AC from SYD-YVR direct may be best option, with the QF options via SYD/BNE/MEL & LAX next best.

Dajop can you recommend any local SIN travel websites or travel agents either for point to point airfares or packages with air & accomm ex SIN so you get a cheapie PER/SIN/PER on JQ website then travel SIN/YVR/SIN or SEA/SFO etc on a separate ticket?

Not sure re packages, for getting airfare prices I look at www.airfares.com.sg, Your Online Travel Agency - Cheap Travel Deals - ZUJI - Singapore and Chan Brothers & individual airline websites. The first of these actually is quite good in that allows you to look at fares by city (and also can look at by airline) to get an idea of what fares are out there.

FWIW,
The flight option on CX from CNS has good connections in HKG to YVR.
Not easy to get from PER-CNS, I know.
