I was just catching up on my newspaper reading when i came across this story in the Australian Financial Review. Sorry but they are on a subscription model so the full story isn't there.

JB Hi-Fi scores with customers

But it is about the release of the Corporate Reputation Index, compiled by AMR (a global market research firm) The punch line of the story is that JB Hi-fi had the number 1 reputation for this year and Telstra was second last.

But the thing that stuck me was that Qantas was 4th top in reputation, moving from 15th in 2009. Now there has been much speculation that there is a ongoing conspriacy to publish many baseless stories in order to damage Qantas' reputation. (I'm not saying there isn't such a campaign, but) This story suggestions that the conspriacy isn't working. Maybe the public aren't so stupid to not understand the underlying message in all these stories that Qantas puts safety above all else?

BTW Virgin Blue drop one place from 5th to 6th.

About time - at least some print media are willing to support truth in print - now all we need is that trend to expand.

Maybe it’s the fact that any publicity is good publicity, and while they may publish bad stories, as you say, the public isn’t that daft, and their name is being put out there a lot more.

It’s like RyanAir.

We are bombarded with various stats and surveys all showing Qantas in many different positions rankwise. Which one is the best? Which one is correct? Which one was based on rubbish research?

If NoNews were to have a poll on their website, I'm sure Qantas would come up badly. But their methodology is different to how Choice surveys (for example).

I'm always interested in aviation and planes, so chat frequently to friends (and strangers) about various topics. When Qantas is discussed, it is only rarely that they complain about lack of maintenance or their safety record. Actually, the main complaints tend to be either lack of service or the cost of fares compared to other airlines.

Opinions are easily bought. (heck, just look at FF'ers who only rave about Qantas! ).

Hmm, hope that came out different than you had originally planned, Mal - the opinions of many in favour of QAN are never easy to establish but very easy to lose!

Ever thought that many FF'ers only rave about QAN because they have tried others and found them seriously lacking in comparison? Have flown in Europe and US with other companies, and my partner has flown on many others. We keep coming back to QAN for consistency, reliability (albeit with a few initial hassles with A3Lately) - and when things do go wrong, they look after you!
