Can anyone tell me if a classic award flight will count as 1 of the 4 sectors that need to be flown to attain/retain status?

I don't think an award flight counts as one of the 4 eligible flights required to attain/retain status. When you look at an activity statement you will see an

next to the flight but with classic award flights it is missing. There is also a note at the bottom

Eligible flight (Qantas, QantasLink or Jetstar segment) counted towards status attain/retain

While a classic award does not count, an anyseat award should. 'Eligible flights' include Anyseat awards and exclude classic awards.

Don't count unfortunately... So far all my flights this year (and my membership year) have been classic awards, so right now there is a big notice in my QF member's page stating I still need to do 4 qualifying segments.

I have taken both a classic award flight and an anyseat in the last year and found that the anyseat did count and the classic did not (not that it matters because I won't make it to PS this year anyway:()
