Qantas aims for eight million frequent flyers | The Australian

QANTAS this week reached 7 million frequent flyers, putting the loyalty scheme into about half of all Australian households, but it believes the program `s value is not reflected in the share price.

Qantas Frequent Flyer chief executive Simon Hickey said the loyalty program had already set a new goal of 8 million members by the middle of next year after achieving the current target more than two months ahead of schedule.

Wow, that’s a lot of unused points, or account with very small point tallies. Being a relatively new member, my first digit is now slightly older than a few, and presumably quite a few in the future.

I don't believe there are anywhere near seven million frequent flyers however you define frequent. Maybe four QF flights a year which would enable any status earned to be issued.

So would I be right in thinking that it is not actually how many times you fly but how much information you provide QF in your application, and how much they can sell it for?

This makes it very crowded for points redemptions on first and business long haul.

And that's before you add the number of OW members from other airlines who also get access to awards - eg. (American Airlines apparently has over 50 million members!).

I'll stick to 'The Lounge' for now...no need for crowded, barn-like QPs

Yikes,50 million!
The only problem I have had is when we had paid front tickets for travel internally in the US and the equivalent of our WP had laid claim to the seats using points.
"Honey if I had known we were going to have to travel coach I would have stayed home !" was the comment from the WP travelling partner as we finally got our seats as the door was about to close.

Obviously they have beeing skipping some numbers along the way...

I'm 595**** and my friend is 767**** which is well over 7 million...

Either way I expect there are a lot of "frequent flyers" who have never stepped foot onto a plane (and have no immediate intention of doing so) thanks to the wollies \ QF alliance.

I'd be interested to know how many FF's are really FF's (PS or above) and how many are simply collecting the QFF points from other rewards programs because it seems like a good idea.

Also now that joining is free, I guess there would be many "fake" or "duplicate" accounts.

eg. Sign up an extra card under a fake name and give the card to wife/husband/child/father/mother/partner/receptionist to use when they buy at Woolworths/****/Big W and then transfer the points when they get to 10,000.

Sometimes it feels like 8 million in the QP's I access:shock:

I guess the only relief is to become a sky warrior again and gain WP for the J Lounges, but I read where there are only about 4 million inside these!!

Why would you need to sign up a card in a fake name for relatives, when you can sign one up in their real names?

For people less close to you. Or for convenience.

eg. I signed up two different memberships to have two cards for staff to use when they buy work purchases from Woolworths & **** Smith . Which is around $500-$1000 per week. I wouldn't wan't to sign up memberships in their names as they may already be a member of Qantas and/or they may be tempted to keep the points for themselfs.

That’s a bit stingy, but then I guess it is your business and your expenses, so does seem fair, if not a little crazy :p

I think the two staff don't have their own cards anyway, so if I don't get the points, no one will. But I did question whether or not is was worth the extra effort.

I don't think they have been skipping numbers. I posted in another thread.

Is the QFF number issued right now actually represent the number of current QFFers or the number of QFFers since program inception?

In that time QFFers would have passed away, suspended, left the program etc.

I can't remember exactly, but back in the day when you enrolled by filling in a paper based form, wasn't your number pre-printed? (Could be thinking of a different program though). You'd miss some numbers if you did that.

I'd say they have more than likely missed some numbers... I'm pretty sure my friend hasn't only just signed up for QFF, and yet he has 767****. so that means that they have probably skipped over at least 600,000 different numbers for some reason or another...

That said, I would love to meet the person who has QFF membership number 1.
