When I travel in July by Malaysian to KL - LHR I will be asking at Check In on all flights if I could have an Op Upgrade, travelling alone and never having travelled by anything but cattle class ....Wish me luck..what is that you say noooo chance lol ?

I'd rate it about the same as buying a lotto ticket and using your winnings to upgrade

Very good luck. MH (atleast to the people I know traveling on MH) have pretty much had a track record of zilch op-ups so don't hold your breath.

But it doesn't hurt to try.

Never hurts to ask, Never flown MH before but on QF one day I just asked the question at QF check in and was given a J boarding pass. Score!

I’m sure there was a thread somewhere that said asking on check-in gets tedious for the staff and as simple as a question it is, it’s not recommended. Remember reading about it somewhere, but not going to bother searching.

I’ve done similar in the past though, to varying success.

I've been op-upped on MH once - KUL-MEL a few years ago from J to F.

Went straight to the F Lounge at KLIA which was lovely, and then had an awesome flight home.

No status or anything, and I was on a very cheap J saver fare.

Not meaning to be rude but I cannot understand the obsession with op-ups. If someone wants to be in business class then purchase a business class ticket or use points to upgrade.

I agree. I have never asked for an op-up at check-in and do not see a need to change that strategy.

But the tedious'ness is upon the check-in agent

It takes 10 words to politely enquire about an op-up - even if its unsuccessful, there's no loss or pain really

How about you at least get a little creative....

Carry some kind of giant teddy bear for some humanitarian cause?
Have some major emotional stress that makes you cry that you are leaving your gf/bf for the first time
Have your leg in plaster that looks like you need extra care.
Some other unique and cute presentation that might work.

When I lived in regional Qld a few years ago, I always took my wife to the check-in. She had delivered many of the QF staffers' babies and they always looked after her by upgrading me. She was upgraded when she travelled but she didn't travel that much.

If you haven't booked yet it may be worth choosing a carrier who offer a paid upgrade on departure (generally cheaper than buying a J ticket beforehand).

Well all I can say is that once you travel in J, you will never want to fly Y again

Perhaps that is true for a very small percentage of people but it is not the case for everyone. e.g I have a limited travel budget and I want to fly as often as possible. I appreciate op-ups (if and when they happen once in a blue moon) but I can only afford to sit in economy.

Well all I can say is that once you travel in J, you will never want to fly Y again

There's J and there's J. PX J has plenty legroom, lay back seats, but more of the pretty ordinary food (I feel compelled to eat when offered!). I am not a large person and happy to ride in Y.

QF J - thats another matter!
