Hi to all,

Just wanted to relay some feedback regarding a very recent in flight experience with Qantas.

It seems that the inflight PA announcements are getting longer and longer and longer......!

On a flight a few weeks ago the in flight announcement for Change for Good went on for what seemed like an eternity.

Seriously, the flight attendant could have been auditioning for Deal or No Deal!

He actually was quite charismatic, however, the announcement went on far too long.

Just wondering if anyone else has had this experience and if so what are your thoughts?

BTW, the PA announcements to HK of course happen twice so the announcements are actually twice as long anyway!

To be honest I have not noticed if the PA announcements have gotten longer but then again I only pay attention if something interests me.

I especially like the ones where a CSM - usually lady - starts trying to use words they don't really know the meaning of ( :) ) or start down a track of absolute garbage which bores the $hit out of me.

Yesterday the CSM on a MEL/SYD flight dribbled on and on for eternity about "reading material", told us they were dimming the "illumination" for take off, and we could turn the overhead reading lights on if we wished to continue reading our material (!) by pressing the illuminator button (yes its true) in our arm rest...

She also had the worst case of brown nosing I have ever seen with obviously a celeb (who I didn't recognize) or a CL - either way, it was to the detriment of the level of service owed to the other J PAX on the aircraft.

Today, SYD/ADL, there was a hold up loading freight/luggage, so the CSM had the FA's do the safety presentation before we had pushed off - thats a first for me... :)

Me neither usually - however if you had of been on my flight you would have noticed for sure!

Mr!

I have also noticed that with PA announcements on flights - what causes people to start using words they would not normally use when confronted with a PA system? There's a PhD in that for someone.

Must make sure I pay more attention on my next few flights.

Flying up SYD-BNE on Sunday night and the announcement coming into BNE seemed the same to me. The CSM reads from a manual and does not bother to check the time of arrival. We landed at 9:25pm and the airtrain has long since finished for the night, no point in using the complimentary T-Bus transfer to international as I do not believe there are any QF international flights that late at night.

You might be onto something there...

Dear Monash Uni

I wish to conduct a study on why people speak differently on PA's than they do in normal circumstances. I believe that we need a controlled repeatable subject, therefore, I suggest my subject matter be Qantas CSM's.

To conduct this study to produce the est possible thesis, I propose that Monash Uni pays for me to embark on a 2 year study - travelling extensively across the world in J and F (to be closer to the CSM to allow a complete observation)...

Hi Parksie,

I have had a similar experience on an HKG PER sector where the ageing CSD gentleman clearly loved the sound of his voice. It was excruciating to listen to each announcement where he took more than double as long with silly detail and and virtually repeating everything (in English!) twice!

It was also the only aspect of his service to which he put in any effort which made it even worse. None of the J crew made any effort. Your post has reminded me I intended to write a letter of complaint to QF!

Perhaps it's HKG route specific? Could it be the same guy?

Cheers,

FFan

I also love the CSMs who drraaawwww ooouuttt tttthhheeee wooorrrdds ssooo it takes an eternity to get through the announcement.

And lets not forget where the video completely fails and they have to read it out over the PA. :p

I'm sorry, but does anyone still listen to the CSM announcements these days?

I'm usually sat down, canal earphones plugged into the armrest, radio fired up and switching off until the safety presentation. After safety, they're straight back in only to be removed during cabin service, toilet service, or on docking.

Can't stand the announcements, know the spiel, and don't need to hear it again thanks.

Maybe new QF policy is to dispatch all the hopeless crews on the HKG routes...

... and in my experience, reading it quickly as opposed to drawn out, making me fumble like there is no tomorrow to keep up with the safety demo. :S

But the PA overrides the IFE and you still get to listen to the rubbish.

But, what about the $1500 RTW challenge??? :p:shock::lol:

Had a good one at the overwing exit TSV-BNE the other day - instead of the usual "in the unlikely event of an emergency ..." blah blah the FA said "right if we ditch, pick up that door and throw it out the gap - and trust me, you'll throw it clear to Cairns ..."

Made a nice change.

Was on a flight recently, and FA's were taking turns providing landing information in the three languages required.

FA #3 was right next to a crying baby, and so the entire flight got to hear the child screaming their head off.

Ahh the joys!

Ok first tip regarding phds - the uni doesn't pay for anything. You'd have to find sponsorship or a scholarship.

Dear Mac Airports
I want to do a PA study, this will help you save money by .........

Please pay for my study
