I have found Crown Currency Exchange at Toowong to have OK rates and no fees. They also have branches on the Gold Coast.
There is another place on Adelaide St near Ted's Camera Store which has OK rates and has some good specials from time to time.

I am buying USD at the moment. Can't give you an actual comparison with "in country" exchange rates as I am predicting a fall in the AUD by the time of my Thailand trip in June. I don't want to purchase Thai Baht outside of Thailand but I am looking for an exchange rate of around USD 0.88-0.90 cents. The USD-THB exchange rate appears to be stable while the AUD-THB exchange rate can be volatile. What currency do you exchange JohnK? Also how does that compare to the "in country" rate once you get there?
I agree that with most currencies, especially SE Asia, it is best to buy "in country". Where I run into hassles with exchange rates and fees is USA and most of Europe.I always buy "in country" as my perception of FOREX in Australia is "overpriced"
