There are the generic pax stereotype articles that fill column spaces in travel sections and endless blog posts. We can do better with real world experiences (which will, in all likelihood, be appropriated by aforementioned articles).

From my recent flights:
  • The clueless seat searcher. Starts intently looking for seat 38D whilst passing row 1.
  • The “you’re in my seat” erroneous accuser.
  • The plonker (literally). The whole airframe shuddered as they slam into their seat.
  • The backpack whack jack.
  • The Director. Usually the male head of the family directing everyone else where to sit. Can only be done from the centre of the aisle while ignoring everyone else trying to progress.
  • Mr very important business call. Very rarely is this a Miss. Maybe females just have more self awareness.
  • The, ‘I’ve just got to my seat now I’ll start to organise my fifteen carry-on pieces before sitting down’ aisle blocker. Bonus points when they sit down then immediately decide they need to take off a piece of clothing and store it with their overhead carry on.

Is every pax moving house? How can so much, be carried on, by so many, so often?

  • The “my bum is glued to the seat” in the aisle or middle seat - they will NOT stand up to let you get through to your seat, or if they do stand, it is with audible sighing and eye rolling.
  • The excited kid - skipping down the aisle with their colouring book clutched in their little hands and their cute little back pack, always followed by:
  • The pack horse mum (sometimes dad) - who is carrying everything the whole family needs for the upcoming 14hr flight. She always looks so tired.
  • The “My First Trippers” - in their late teens or early 20s, they are just like the excited kids only bigger and without pack horse mum (who was probably crying tears of mixed emotion) as the Trippers headed to security.
  • The “who on earth are you” - aged in their 20s they arrive dressed for a photo shoot and head for their J or even F seat SYD-PER-LHR with their July hand luggage. How do they afford that? Are they Crypto millionaires or just credit card points millionaire AFF members who know how to work the system?
I’m sure I will think of more.

I have experienced all the above which I can (just) tolerate.

It is the screaming / crying toddler that drives me insane!

On a trip to Fiji last year, a toddler screamed throughout the entire 4.5 hour flight..the lady across from me covered her ears, I used my NC earphones and played music at quite high volume. +1 who is quite tolerant said she had a headache at the end of the flight. A FA came to see if she could help and the toddler screamed at her and she made a quick retreat. The child must have ADHD or something as nothing the parents did would calm her down.

I nearly had a heart attack when +1 said i hope they are not staying at the same resort as us...thankfully they weren't!

We once had a screaming kid the whole way from SYD to HNL. You can imagine our dismay when they were also on our return flight a week later 😭
