Over the years somehow I've found myself onto a large number of mailing lists for accommodation providers - either hotels direct or various agents. Mainly because I have made online bookings with them at some stage.

Whilst I still get value out of airline "specials" emails (at least for full service carriers) I find many of the accommodation "specials", once you dig beneath the surface, quite a waste of time even reading. Great deals get 20% off or something, but off what? Dates are limited, pricing so variable that I don't even bother until I have firm dates in mind. Sometimes you miss a gem (such as Accor $50 deals) but then there are others I am mega-signed up to (Hilton springs to mind) that the only place I notice really good specials (eg Winter sale) on their website.

Worst ones I am aware of are Stamford and their annoying emails and accomline/dreamclub.

Net result, I am steadily unsubscribing from hotel offer type emails.

Do others feel the same way, or am I being a tad cynical?

Oh yes, I had the same trouble with the Amari Hotel (next to BKK).

Stayed there 1 night in 2003, between flights (BNE/BKK and BKK/HKT). Of course completing the guest card, they had my email.

Wouldn't stay there again, for many and varied reasons.

Until I finally got a decent spam filter, they were emailing me. I kept filling out unsubscribe options (I think), emailing them back every time etc...

I find having an email (or alias) solely for getting those sorts of emails works best, and when I arrive at a new hotel and have to fill out the guest details, they don’t get my email. Never had anywhere insist… and if they did I’d make something up.

Wot?

(Or to keep the system happy, because it doesn't like 3 character messages, wot?)

You know where the delete key is, and maybe, every now and then, they will throw a bone your way... (they have for me at least).
