Melbourne Airport - Plan your journey before you pick up or drop off

Familiarise yourself with your new pick up and drop off journey before it opens on 6 October.

Simply choose your start and end points to watch a step-by-step video, so you'll know exactly where to go before you arrive.

Travellers panic about ‘long walk’ at Melbourne Airport in major change to pick-up, drop-off process

Help! The long and winding road that leads to your door.
Is there any airport in Australia with a longer journey to get out?

That is pretty long. But I guess once the current road is swallowed up into the terminal building then it wouldn't feel as long even if technically the distance will remain the same.

The old departure stop placed disabled passengers much closer to the check in. There is assistance available in the new system but it is well hidden in the information being provided by the airport.

It’s those Jetstar gates down the end that are the killer. It’s a long trek especially to the hire cars etc, even more so for some of the hire car drop offs are pretty much next to Centre Rd inside the carpark.

Will be interesting to see if the pickup or drop off areas get backed up. I guess what happens for pickup if all the spots are taken? Trying to work out how you actually get back into the complex, not like you just exit and go back in, it’s entry is off the elevated road.. Bit like missing the turnoff on the highway coming in, certainly can make things hard for yourself trying to go back and start again.

Its undercover
Try walking from Heathrow to Elizabeth line station.
There is a Buggy service between T123 and Terminals.
It is not a long walk - less than 1km from the furthest point in any terminal.
Are people really complaining about 1km?
Sydney DOM to P3 pickup is about the same.

Might be important for @drron.
I think he is going there soon.
I suspect his battery can last that distance.

All very well if you walk 1, 2 or 3km for fun but without whinging I’m reliant on an elbow crutch to get around and plan every step in an airport so it’s a big deal for me.

The walk from immigration to the MEL T2 departure gates through the Duty Free concessions feels about as long to me. But, it is at least undercover. And I imagine also has a buggy service…. @Quickstatus

Any walk would have to be shorter than the current domestic Sydney arrivals to passenger pick up? Now that’s a looong walk.
Agree - that system is a joke, nearly 1km uphill all the way with your bags, and any relative who comes to pick you up has to pay $5 to get into the place where you end up in. An absolute disgrace for an Australian airport……

That's why I specifically mentioned the
Buggy service
Connection service , mobility hub
Thank you but I want to be “normal” and get under my own steam, this seems a really badly conceived plan when compared to just about every other airport drop off in the world - I already spend every trip fighting of kindly wheelchair drivers. Maybe the reality won’t be as bad …

that system is a joke
Sydney donestic airport has outgrown itself in the constrained space that it has.

Unless a complete tear down and redesigned occurs, everything is going to be a compromise.

Free pickup requires impeccable timing at SYD as the airport allows free 15 minute once a day per car and there is nowhere to park for free if the pickup car arrives too early.
Cars with etoll rfid can use the P2 priority pickup . Otherwise they should use P3 express pickup. Both are poorly named and don't explicitly indicate the difference in using P2 vs P3 without digging into the website.

this seems a really badly conceived plan

The T1,2,3 parking is in a central location - both short term and long term. There is also a cheaper "value" long term car park with free bus access for those who want the cheaper option.

The T123 is so named for T1,2,3 passengers. Pickup for T1,2,3 passengers occur undercover in the T123 parking area
Free first 15 minutes for cars picking up.
There is also a free 1hr waiting area for cars picking up passengers nearby and this is key unlike SYD.

Drop off for T1,2,3 passengers is in a central location at T123 - including rideshares
The video posted in the original link is the "pickup" video , not the "drop off" video

Note that the lifts to/from T1,2,3 and T123 are extrawide

Rideshare, taxis pickup for T1,2,3 passengers are still on the forecourt of T1,2,3

T4 passengers are still picked up and dropped off in the T4 transport hub

Just go to the MEL Youtube channel and look at the videos

Quote on radio this morning indicated was "280 metres" from the new area to "Qantas".

Looking at some maps, the original walkway overpasses from each end the hotel are 120m alone.

280 metres"
The media (if we can call them that) probably given a press release from MEL airports.

They probably used the T123 lift to the terminal door.

I wonder if the Mods can modify title of this thread to make searching easier
"The long walk at Melbourne Airport -new T123 parking"?

I'll have a look at it next month, but this is so long overdue. Ignoring the perpetual traffic jam that existed, having random cars parked next to the terminal has always been a security nightmare.
