I could be imagining this, but I thought I once read somewhere that the old control tower and associated buildings between T2 and T3 were deemed to have heritage value which is what has stymied the logical construction of the missing link between the two terminals. The renders certainly don't appear to incorporate it in their proposed design, so presumably it will be demolished. They already painted it McMansion greige which is a travesty in and of its self.

This T2-T3 connector development is planned to be complete by 2030.

From what I can tell only the current SYD tower (No 5) is heritage listed.
No 1 didn't last long
No 2 as described above - though the tower is long gone and signficant internal changes
No 3 was a brick building demolished in 2005
No 4 still exists near the airport beach

What’s missing from that list is the SMCA tower at the international terminal, a seperate controller was based there to look after the international terminal apron, did a few shifts there, it was weird walking to work through duty free!

I guess with this setup, trans tasman flights might be getting lounge downgrades? Assuming you're on a T2/T3 departure, I can't see having access to T1 Int'l lounges.

I wouldn’t be surprised if QF get space for a new premium (J lounge) with good views?

That’s what i was assuming in my earlier post. The stuff shown in purple (shading) in the draft plan was for immediate development and there was a bunch of stuff for 10+ years away.

But as above, what remains of the old terminal would make a great internal feature if they could.



I suspect we’ll see media coverage of what’s coming soon.

Both MEL and PER have far more substantial construction projects in planning over similar timelines.

Particularly PER, if they can get cracking. It’ll possibly become one of the best airports in Oz. Consolidated Domestic and International ops with an airport rail link.
