Changing amex from qantas to MR

Hey guys. I currently have a qantas ultimate card but as im thinking of changing from qantas points to MR points.

Has anyone been able to get the bonus points from Amex when changing cards?

I'm pretty sure that when Amex says bonus points are "only available to new American Express® Card Members" in their terms and conditions, this means you have to have cancelled any previous American Express cards at least 18 months prior... This forum would erupt if anyone was able to get around that!

you can get bonus points for upgrading cards within the same family but not outside. As above, you won't be eligible unless you have not held an Amex card for 18 months.

Is that a ‘thing’ in AU? I’m guessing that's if Amex invite you to upgrade say from a ‘lesser’ MR card like Explorer to Platinum though one’s a credit card & the other is a charge card. I didn’t know they had any other MR cards left in AU.

You can often downgrade a Platinum to a Green or Gold.

It certainly is a thing within card families - spouse upgraded through the Qantas card family this way. I don't think you can changing card families though, I expect Amex will just tell you to apply for whatever card you want.

ok if there is the option to downgrade to non publicly available cards like green or gold charge card and then wait for an upgrade to platinum offer then that will be the stance which can be taken. I'm guessing there won't be any of those offers until Amex announces what the redesigned MR will look like post the October changes to interchange, etc. I guess we should know by the end of the month if they want to give us 30 days' notice (not sure if they need to give us this amount of notice but assuming this is what we should be granted).

Sorry, to be clear you can downgrade in your card family including to non publicly available cards. So if you have a Plat already you can downgrade to a Gold or Green charge card. I don't think there's any evidence that you can switch from a Qantas Ultimate to a Gold card.

For info, Amex is not subject to the 1 October interchange regulations change. So I wouldn't expect them to make significant changes on that basis.

I agree, AMEX is not subject to the October 1 changes, the RBA will have its medicine in the next few months. Having said that, Amex doesn't operate in a vacuum so will have to reduce its Merchant fees in line with what MC & Visa are forced to do in October to avoid being shunned by merchants and all of us carrying around our shiny Amex cards but increasingly less places to use them. We will see an adjustment on Amex and I think it will be taking place from October, That's my view YMMV.
