And it's an Airbus - big surprise!
I have it on good authority the QF crews refer them as the Hyundais of the Skies.

Of course most of the crews using those words most likely are Boeing crews and have never even flown it.

What is with people here jumping on the 'A330 again' bandwagon. It is an airplane, it will have issues now and then. How many Boeings have had to return with problems shortly after takeoff? HEAPS! Honestly, think before speaking.

How about the Thai Airways B747-400 that had a hole blown through the side of the engine and inflight shutdown during climbout the other week at Bangkok? Should we say, Oh no... not another Boeing 747 problem....
some people here are as bad as the media!

SQ1, exactly my point.

Yes my original point may have been OT, but my thoughts have been that there has been a lot of mislaid hype regarding the safety of the A330.

To back my point up, SQ, TG, QF, MH, D7, CX etc all run regular A330 runs into PER. Surely if it was the Scarebus of the airways, why would carriers still invest in the model?

I dont know. I haven't seen the same level of small incidents with B777..

Maybe airlines by airbus because of cost per seat is lower on A330 then Boeing metal ?

Because Qantas do not fly 777's. You are looking at this through the eye of the Australian media. This eye does not see very much, in fact it is close to being blind.

Well said dazz81!!!!!!!

Another version is 'Scarebus'

dazz81,

The first person who told me of the Scarebus name was a senior CX A340 Check & Training Captain whom I have known for 40 years. He has extensive experience on a variety of types including Boeing and Airbus aircraft. From that I suspect he probably knows what he is talking about :!:

I wasn't even looking at the australian media.

Airbus A330 #667 flying - First flight 1992 - 10 incidents, 2 Hull Loses, 3 other losses -
total of 235 fatalities

Boeing 777 #822 flying- First flight 1995 - 7 incidents, 1 Hull Loses, No fatalities

You said small incidents, then you start talking about fatalities and hull losses. 1 of those A330 crashes was an Airbus test flight. So you are looking at 1 major crash in commercial operation, over a long period of time. And the reason for that 1 major crash we don't really even know for certain yet.

@straitman - people have been using 'scarebus' since Airbus started, if your friend was so scared of it, he would not be an A340 check and training captain then would he?

dazz81,

I did not say or suggest that he was scared of the Airbus. I was merely responding to your comment 'Of course most of the crews using those words most likely are Boeing crews and have never even flown it.' and how within the large group of airline pilots that I know your comment is incorrect.

I do think last not least it comes back to each single airline how well are they train their pilots, especially with all the new electronics and how good is their service on the planes.!!!!! ;)

You can have the most reliable planes in the world, if you don't look after your fleet and don't train your pilots etc there will be incidents and unfortunately crashes as well!! :(

And of course......up there..........mother nature has usually always the last word!!!

Cheers

Fair enough if that is what you have found. My experience is different.
