For a while now, I’ve noticed that Qantas makes a boarding call at Hobart before the aircraft is ready for general boarding.

As they are no air bridges at HBA, this means walking out through the outside cattle runs, and we are pulled up by an agent before the walk across the open tarmac to the boarding ramp.

Usually we are waiting for one or two wheelchair pax to be taken up the ramp and the chairs brought down again.

I have always thought that was done to alleviate crowding at the gate inside as it is usually very crowded.

But today, no crowding and not even a queue when they called for Group 1.

Onto the tarmac we went and waited for the wheelchair pax. I love the smell of JetA1 in the morning!

So I asked the agent if there was a change in policy to get passengers out of the terminal as quickly as possible. Sort of, Qantas wants to speed up the turn-around to about the same time as Jetstar.

So here we are on our B737, with almost everyone on board 25 mins before departure 👏 But of course there are the stragglers, so here we sit.

Not complaining ( but a proper PDB here in J would be nice!) but hopefully they can refine the timing a bit.

they can refine the timing a bit.
By sorting out the carry on baggage issue
The primary bottleneck in boarding a single aisle is the interference caused by stowing carry ons in overhead compartments (after they take their time getting stuff out of the carry on before stowing, followed by aisle and middle seat passengers having to get out of seat to accomodate window pax.

Maybe they should call passengers in three groups - window, middle and finally aisle seat 😂🤣😄

Just joking... And definitely carry on issue here is nothing compared to US domestic flights...

Actually that is the most efficient boarding strategy

window, middle and finally aisle seat
The WILMA strategy

Back to front may not necessarily be faster than random or zone boarding - the problem with back to front is that passengers will still get jammed up.
A better back to front method might be the back to front but alternate rows. Eg do all the even rows back to front then the odd rows back to front.

I think the horse has bolted WRT to carry on baggage.

Oh, it worked fine today.

Everyone on board 15 mins prior to pushback
