Sorry, should have been clearer. I use the mega-zeroes method with websites that insist you give them a phone number when there is no good reason for requiring it (and you can't complete their form without supplying one).

Oh… in those cases I get the email address and phone number of the ‘media enquiries’ unit, or customer service 🤣🤣 Usually easy to find with contact us->media!

Another good one is to use some recorded voice announcement numbers which are valid, working numbers.

0418707301 – "the number you are calling is not available"
0418707307 – "the number you are calling is not responding"
0418707310 – returns a busy tone
0418707316 – "the mobile phone you are calling is switched off or not in a mobile service area"
0418707317 – "the number you are calling is not connected"

Another is to use voicemail "pilot" numbers that are where the diversions are sent to or where a user of the service can connect to their mailbox off a different device.
The bonus here is that if the caller uses their own mobile to spam on the same network they may be connected to their direct voicemail box.

Optus: 0411000321

I agree the new site is grossly deficient compared to the old.

As with the BOM and nabtrade, change for change's sake is rarely for the better. This isn't a Luddite-like observation: it's simply 'if it ain't broke...'

Before reading this thread, I reluctantly (and probably foolishly) supplied my telephone number as well as email address.

However as my first name, I chose a stupidly-spelt slight variant, so I can immediately notice emails (or phone calls) that are the result of Aerolopa selling its mailing list.

We all understand the need for site owners to monetise if it's not just a hobby, but I wonder in whose nefarious hands my information will eventually end up.

this is why I own "myname.com" (not my real domain name!) and have a catchall mailbox so I can have qantas@ virgin@ anz@ and so on where I can instantly identify the source of the email list compromise and choose to blackhole it.
Thankfully after doing this for about 20 years I only had to blackhole about 10 companies, so there is mostly compliance around the place but the worst is my Superannuation fund who have shared my info to political parties for me to be spammed to vote for their candidate - political parties are exempt from the unsolicited spam laws and sadly I couldn't report them nor the super fund.

It sounds like you’ve signed up so how do you say that? The amount of information supplied when you sign up is vastly greater and more useful than before. I’m using it regularly.

Well, that’s a risk we all take with any site, from Qantas upwards, when we sign up. 😊

But in respect to phone spam, I don’t answer any number I don’t recognise. I gave a junk email address where the spam cascades in and I’ll check occasionally and sift out any ones I want to see. No biggie.

I mean, it’s bad if they sell on the information or it gets hacked but in the blizzard of hacks these days, I personally judge the information supplied is worth that risk.
