50000 Bonus Aeroplan points with new HSBC Star Alliance Card

Yes… aeroplan status is the remainder of the calendar year you qualify, plus the calendar year after. So if you qualify in Jan 2026, you’ll have until december 2026 (plus the grace period until 31 Jan 2028).
Hey @MEL_Traveller - just about to select my status airline, and was wondering if you would have the official SA link that explains this Aeroplan two-year status. I am pretty sure I saw the link somewhere a few months back, but unfortunately cannot find it anymore!

It’s not a star alliance link. It’s aeroplan’s own rules and qualification cycle.

It works the same way as qantas, once you attain status you keep it for the rest of the year you’re in, and the year after.

Although Aeroplan works on calendar years rather than individual months.

How long after meeting spend and nominating aeroplane does one receive status ?

14 days. It will say it on the bottom of the email you get once you meet your spend. I got my email this morning, spend met yesterday (5/01), email confirms Status Airline will be done on 19/01. I have already selected Aeroplan so you just wait.

Yes, my experience with both Aeroplan and MileagePlus is that once the 14-day window elapsed the chosen status was granted within hours.

Hi everyone,

I just signed up and added the card to my Apple Wallet. I received an email to enroll in the Star Alliance awards program. However, I noticed that you need to enroll in Aeroplan to qualify for the 30,000 bonus points, so I’m hesitant to complete the Star Alliance award sign-up.

Does anyone have any advice on what I need to do to comply? Thank you!

You cannot get the aeroplan status unless you have a star alliance account.

You sign up to star alliance first. Once you have met the spend requirements you choose aeroplan through the star alliance rewards site.

Does all spend required need to move from pending to settled before it is considered as eligible and to receive email ?

But I need the star alliance ID to register and nominate my choice of airline ?
HSBC just informed me that I will only receive the same on my first statement to be issued beginning of next month .
But I read elsewhere that I should have received ID by email when card was approved.
Which one is correct ?

Is it true that I need to wait for first statement to be issued to find out my star alliance id ?

You can go to the star alliance rewards website and register: https://rewards-auth.staralliance.com/

As soon as you make the required spend you can nominate your program, which could be well in advance of any statement being issued.

I have not received the same . That’s the crux of my query at the moment .

Your star alliance ID comes by email.

You should get an email that says ‘congratulations… we’ve approved your application’. Following on from that it says you’ll receive your card in the mail and a separate email with your star alliance ID.

The email comes from Star Alliance Rewards, contains your ID and a link to complete registration.

I got my approval email and then the star alliance email the day after. Check your spam folders too!

I also received my star alliance email the day after I was approved.

Same, appears it is automatic and 1 day after approval (albeit I was approved on a weekend, so got the email on Tuesday being a day after the first working day I guess!)

Yes, needs to move from pending to be eligible for the total spend.

Actually I received neither the approval nor email with star alliance id . Checked all folders
